Also, for anyone planning on writing in Ron Paul - look, if you want your vote to count, vote for a third party. Paul isn't running and any vote for him won't even be tallied - at least if you vote for a third party, you can help them secure ballot access.

Better than completely throwing your vote away.

i dont. but back then I made myself vote since it was my first election and all. But I just cant find enough reasons to want either of these men as president. my problem, like several others, is that I am a conservative but not a Republican (based on the current party's ideals).

The vast tide of humanity in NC will always vote Republican in presidential elections(for the next few decades anyway). If you vote Democrat, your vote doesn't matter. If you vote Republican, your vote still doesn't matter. Even if there was a third party candidate on the ballot, your vote wouldn't matter. Even if your vote did somehow miraculously influence the outcome in NC, our electoral votes would be overwhelmed by rest of the south/midwest, who will also always vote republican.

Do yourself a favor and spend more time researching local elections instead.

Which is why Gore and Kerry lost elections. Democrats weren't that excited about either candidate, but they hated Bush. Unfortunately for them, excited voters turn out much more than disgruntled ones.

Does anyone here actually want a president or congress? Fuck, I don't. I just want to be left alone to work and spend as I see fit. If that means that I get paid in certificates redeemable for x pounds of wheat instead of $ bills then so be it. Government in its current state sucks cock and balls.

Seriously, I'm voting Barr, not that I'm excited about it, but he's better than the other choices. If I were inclined to vote R or D I'd just find somebody else who was voting the other way, we'd agree to stay home and we'd call it a day.

Nope, I find government pretty unpalatable and basically useless to me on a personal level. I don't think it makes much difference which party controls the house or presidency. My preference is gridlock. The more the better. I'd like to see a marginal control of both houses by one party (no more than 55-45) and the presidency by the other party so that neither one can force through their particular brand of big government nonsense. It's all tax and spend politics, they just differ slightly on what they want to spend it.

If you mean that the ability of human beings to live together in a civilized fashion is due to government I would disagree. Government really only becomes useful once you reach the amount of people needed to cause conflict on a general scale and then only to moderate that conflict. However it always ends up being bloated way out of proportion to that one really necessary function. I've often hypothesized about what that exact number is.

It's not a law of nature that government gets too bloated. The idea is to control it so that it is as effective as possible at the minimal set of things it's warranted to operate on.

Everybody agrees on this ideal. The disagreement comes is asking what that minimal set of things includes.
