This is an old story that I saw on TLC last night about a 51 year old Portugeuse guy with a tumor on his face that now weighs 12 pounds. It started growing out of his lip when he was 14. He doesn't work and just lives off of his sister and her family. Everyday he wakes up and goes to a square in his town and watches people. He then gets mad when people look at him. He's a Jehovah's Witness b/c of his mother, although he doesn't attend church, so he refuses having a blood transfusion if he was to undergo surgery. His sister does not share in his beliefs. The tumor is now causing difficulty for him with breathing, eating, and hygiene in his mouth as it has spread to his tongue. It also has entirely covered his left eye.

I personally think he's an idiot for having let this go on for so long. During the documentary his sister got mad at him and basically said he would have to leave b/c she couldn't take it anymore. He wasn't willing to help himself out. He's supposed to have decided to have pieces gradually removed, also a doctor in London thinks that they can use ultrasound waves to coagulate his blood before the operation. Hopefully he will get the surgery before the tumor causes him to die.

Do you think the government should make it where if a child needs a surgery that requires a blood transfusion, then the parents can't step in and tell the doctors to not perform the surgery? Why should the child suffer b/c of the parents religion?

^That's a tough situation.

While I'd prefer the government to stay out of my life as much as possible, at the same time, preventing needed blood transfusions is murder/torture.

In the end, I guess I'd have to stick with personal freedoms and religious freedoms. Does it mean people will make stupid/bad decisions? I guess so.

the man with the face tumor if I remember correctly is already blind in one eye. He is currently losing sight in the other. This is one of the things that is making him consider the surgury.
