I worked there for most of high school and some summers. You can get deals on the 365 stuff if you shop right

but if you use double coupons at harris teeter, it's cheaper than whole foods, food lion, lowes, and kroger combined

Their veggies and fruits seem much more expensive IMO, but it is good quality food.
Other than that the foods seem so different it is hard to compare. I go to HT for Coca-cola and Ore-Ida french fries. I go to Whole Foods for pita points and hummus dip.

Fresh fruits/veggies should be cheaper because they're buying local. However HT is world renowned for being the most expensive place to get groceries...

Harris Teeter is stupid expensive because they have very high operating costs. In order to be profitable an avg. HT needs to do in the neighborhood of 400k-1million/week in sales. By contrast a Food Lion can run in the black doing only 100k/week.

Harris Teeter is only worth going for double/triple coupons.

Everything else I pick up at Foodlion or Aldi

Actually to add to that, despite the organic raspberries (@wf) being cheaper than the regular harris teeter raspberries, the HT ones also had fungus on them...ew.

They're berries, that happens, but that's also why you cull your dept. as you work. They can literally grow mold in about 30 minutes or if they get jostled and damaged all that sugar and moisture is a recipe for mold.

I'm always pleasantly surprised at how low my WF receipts are when I leave with a bag full of stuff. Their 365 brand is great.

Every time I go to Whole Foods I spend like $40 and leave with one bag of food. I'm not saying I mind or anything, but my money doesn't go very far there. Maybe I'd do better if I bought big sacks of oats or something.

I always spend a shitload there, but 99% of the time ill end up getting some fresh fish or meat, usually cooking for several people and various accompaniments + wine.

If i go there for standard groceries, its actually pretty cheap.

Multiple reasons. Their labor model is significantly different than that of say, a Food Lion, a Bi-Lo, an Ingles, or a Lowe's Food, their brick and mortar building expenses have been higher, they don't have as good a warehouse system, and several other things. Do you really want me to get into the minutiae of the grocery store business?

Basically, they pass their added expenses on to the customer in the form of higher prices on the exact same item vs. Food Lion or other competitors. Hell, Super Wal-Marts operate the grocery portion of the store at a loss, which is why it's so much cheaper to buy food there than anywhere else. They know they can make it back in the general merchandise portion of the store. They also have some much lower quality goods in their fresh departments (which are a poorly run operation even decades after starting the Super Wal-Mart concept). Interestingly enough (well, not really interesting) they are now experimenting with a grocery only store, there are, I believe, 3 currently being run in Oklahoma and Texas if memory serves me.

Because they are such hippies though, they pack more food into one bag.

here's a good HT trick

if you don't have a VIC card, just use any phone number starting with 919-512- X X X X

those are the campus extensions for numbers to dorm rooms. being that most freshmen in college get a vic card their freshman year, nearly every number works.

i've been doing it for years and it always comes through.

Ingles is good.

Trader Joes is AWESOME. Healthy food for cheaper than the bad stuff. Meat is more expensive though because it's organic etc, and produce is about the same anywhere you go. Except when it's on sale at FL because it's expiring in a day lol.

I shop at harris teeter, it's way too expensive.

I go to food lion or wal-mart to get my cheap stuff, and Lowes if I feel the need to go somewhere nicer.

the service at WF is actually really damn good. any time i go i end up in conversation with the person behind the counter and am always finding someone willing to help me.

the visuals are nice there, too. while you may not have the 18 - 20 crowd in such large proportions you definitely have a nice young professional 21 and up crowd, as well as some mommies that have never seen a day of work in their lives and continue to work out.

on the food note, i too, recently, noticed the lower cost of Whole Foods to harris teeter. definitely since groceries went up recently. if you're getting the basic food goods, WF is better in price. if you're getting prepared foods, expect to have something good and fresh but pay an arm and a leg for it.

i can only hope Walls1441 will approve this message.

I realize that HT is expensive, but damn do I wish we had one in the shitty little town I live in here in SC. We have Piggly Wiggly, Bi-Lo, an IGA, and Wal mart. My wife and I pretty much shop at Wal-Mart because the other three are so ghetto, you feel dirty when you walk in the store.

But Wal-mart sucks because the lines are forever long, the store is crowded with old people and thugs, and they never do any double/triple coupon deals.

I would actually not mind paying an extra $10-15 on my grocery bill just to have a nice, clean store/atmosphere and a good, fresh selection of meat & produce. If I really had my druthers, a local Publix would be even better than an HT.

They're more crust punks than hippies IMO, but you're right about the bag thing. I rarely get a bag because I'm usually just picking up four or five things. I usually just tell them I can carry it, but one time when I needed a couple of bags the bagger and the cashier started talking about how great it would be when everyone started bringing their own bags to save the earth. I responded by asking if they could use plastic instead of paper (knowing that they don't have plastic any more). Smug little bastards.
