I need to burn A LOT of limbs/small trees/etc. Plenty of open space, but also close enough to a state park from which they could possibly spot me.

set it on fire, then call 911 and say your brush pile is on fire, send the fire dept to come put it out. by the time they get there it will be all burned up

I got a $500 ticket for it not too long ago

I say call your local fire department and ask

if you are in the city limits you may have to get a permit anyway

Apply for permit here: http://www.dfr.state.nc.us/burn_permits/burn_permits_main.htm Enter your county.

Quote :
"There are currently no burning bans or permit cancellations in effect from the N.C. Division of Forest Resources. Keep in mind that burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling is regulated by county authority, not the NCDFR"
