I've got a friend in town and he wants to go to a Hibachi style dinner. He doesn't have one around where he lives. Anyways I've been to Kanki before but both times it had a very "Olive Garden/Applebee's/chain rest" feel and if there's a better option I'd like to give it a try. I am looking for the onion volcano, the whole nine yards. Sake will be involved and I'm looking to go Thursday night.

i feel like ALL of these places have a chain like feel. i was thinking about that last week (because i went to one) and its just like, they went out of style. i still like them. i still like the food. but its like an outback or something that used to be nice but now is just like any other restaurant.

although i have to say kanki is one of the nicer ones i've been to. some of the other ones are kinda run down (at least around gboro). just the chairs and things seem old and the decor hasn't really been kept up.

The Kanki on Wake Forest Road is much better than the one at the crabtree. There's a place called Fujisan at Brier Creek, but it's horrible.

thats what happens when you live in raleigh.

With the exception of NYC CHI LA MIA SF SD BOS SEA and NO, all of the us is the same. If you've been to 8 cities, you've been to them all.

There is a new restaurant in Cary that does what Kanki does. Ginza. http://www.ginzanc.com/

But let me get this straight. You think Kanki is "chain-like", yet you want the onion volcano. That seems like a contradiction to me, but oh well.

Ginza is good, but I like Kanki better.

Are you trying to find something authentic or something?

Because the truth is, hibachi is going to feel either like a chain or a dump depending on who is running the place. That stuff was invented so people could feel like they were eating Japanese food without having to eat fishes anuses.

I ate there for lunch two weeks ago. I didn't think it was as great as Kanki, but there was nothing wrong with it.

Oh, and Benihana FTW! Too bad they don't have any in Raleigh though. (interesting side note, I couldn't find any Hibachi style restaurants in Manhattan except for Benihana [which yes is a chain])
