I just watched The Happening and I feel like it resonated with me entirely too much. I feel I'm being influenced much too greatly by media and it needs to stop. It's not a good feeling. Kinda like fighting a war inside of your own mind against irrationality.
I think I'm mostly just stressed out at a bunch of stuff right now and it's weighing on me.
Or I could be going completely crazy. 10/8/2008 4:24:10 AM |

Here's my take on it...
Good general premise. If you can get into and feel what the characters are going through it's a chillingly frightening suspense movie that kind of makes you want to watch it til the end. You might be dissatisfied with the ending, but if you put it in a lens of what man's true purpose on Earth is you might come away with something.
Acting and directing is subpar but that's pretty much to be expected from an M. Night Shyamalan movie nowadays. Wahlberg was very disappointing but the cast is still capable of some powerful emotional scenes. If you can get past the hokeyness and are capable of critically analyzing a film I'd say it's at least worth a viewing.
I'll admit that the recent realization of how fragile the world we live in probably made it seem a little more entertaining than it otherwise would, but even in a more ideal world the film has merit. I also think the glut of quasi-apocalypse material coming out recently added a little to that effect as well.
Basically, you get what you want out of it. 10/8/2008 4:36:51 AM |

^I'd pretty much agree with that.
Except that the ending REALLY SUCKS. "You might be dissatisfied with the ending..." is an understatement. The ending is pretty much: "bad shit happening, then all better!" with no real story, rhyme, or reason. 10/8/2008 6:45:33 AM |

**SPOILER**
Yeah, the ending was pretty weak. But if you consider the climax being when they decide to go outside then it at least falls into the definition of resolution. They both figure out they love each other and they go on living their lives with the little girl. It even leaves open the possibility for The Happening 2: Revenge of The Bees 10/8/2008 9:21:46 AM |
