it was the VP pick. the popularity of Palin was fine and great and strategic, but since the bottom officially fell out and the economy is in a CRISIS . . . This proved to be a fucking nuts.
Had he choice Romney or even Huckabee he'd be in much better shape and potentially ahead in the race. all the racist ads would stick better, his old age could have been easily overlooked. 10/8/2008 6:46:37 PM |

i agree with you that Palin was where he fucked up, but her being a bad choice has nothing to do with the economic crisis.
the problem was, she was picked purely as a gimmick, and she's completely out of her league.
as Twain said, "you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time... but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."
americans have finally woken up. collectively, we can no longer pretend to not smell Bullshit, when it's right under our noses.
the fact that Palin hasn't even *considered* issues of national and internation importance is glaringly obvious, and even the most diehard conservatives can't ignore it.
sure there will be a few retards, and a few fundamentalist bible thumpers who still vote for her.... but overall, not many. 10/8/2008 6:55:57 PM |

he didn't pick Palin to try and get swing voters as a gimmick like schmoe incorrectly suggests, he picked Palin because she is a lot more conservative than he is and he needed to strengthen the right wing base who thought and probably still think that McCain isn't a real conservative
its no surprise that a predominantly left wing website like TWW doesn't get her appeal] 10/8/2008 7:40:32 PM |

yeah you're right, but if he had a better pick he could use a more dignified strategy. His campaign is just so dirty and wrong on so many levels.
Picking Romney or even Palentey would have been more admireable and more in line with his character. the guy was just an annoyance all last night. especially him just hobbling around in the background last night.10/8/2008 7:55:43 PM |

no, the choice of Palin is totally a gimmick. to appeal to christians and housewives and people who generally aren't very bright.
unfortunately for mcCain, the ignorance of the typical red-state american voter DOES have a lower limit. And even more unfortunately for him, he's passed it. 10/9/2008 12:25:42 AM |

Huckabee would have been a much better choice as VP. He's like the Mr. Rogers of Politics. Seriously, have you seen his show. It's the Mr. Rogers show for adults. You can always count on and trust Mr. Rogers. 10/9/2008 1:40:01 AM |

I used to watch Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood back in the day. He was always emphasizing caring and sharing and being a good person. You couldn't help but like the message that Mr. Rogers was promoting. And he always had his trademark intro of putting on his zip-up sweater and putting on his shoes by throwing a single shoe from one hand to another. But one day I saw Mr. Fred Rogers toss his shoe and drop it...I lost faith in humanity, and the world died a little bit. 10/9/2008 1:52:14 AM |

okay. i see what you're looking at now. of course it all depends on what sampling model you use.
but you know what? the only thing that matters is the electoral vote. if we call every state right now, according to the recent averages of each state's polls, the result is:
Obama/Biden 375
McCain/Palin 163

eh, i remember '88. Dukakis was probably one of the worst Democratic nominees in living memory.
Quayle was an bloomin' idiot, but he was also *only* the VP, and GHWB did not have any health issues. the country had recovered from the stock market crash from the year before, and the effects of deficit spending during the reagan years had not yet caught up.
there was no compelling reason NOT to elect GHWB in the mind of most of the public, and a LOT of reasons to not elect Dukakis. I mean, what kind of idiot goes into a general election campaign and says "I will raise your taxes."
i mean, jesus.
FWIW, i think GHWB was overall a good president.
his problem was that he appeared to be clueless and/or uninterested in the experience of the middle class during the recession of 92. he also had the misfortune to be continually hammered by third party candidate Ross Perot on that most famous of broken promises, "Read My Lips: No New Taxes"
