This is an article from WRAL, including an interview with Chuck:
http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/3712100/

here are some gems from the article:
Quote :
"Amato said he felt like he left the program in strong shape when he was fired after the 2006 season.

“There was more skill on that team last year than there was in Tallahasse,” Amato said.

He said State was deep at running back, tight end and in other spots. He also said he thought the Wolfpack was en route to its best recruiting class his final year and pointed out that State had landed its future quarterback in Russell Wilson of Richmond, Va.
"

and here's the best part

Quote :
"Amato said he went to watch the Miami Dolphins practice in the spring, and Miami’s Bill Parcells talked to him at length about his years at N.C. State.

Amato said Parcells told him, “Chuck, don’t hold judges. People in the football world know what you did at North Carolina State and how far you brought that program. You did things nobody else could get accomplished. You raised about $100 million for facilties, which are second to none in country, and you brought enthusiasm and excitement to that place.”"

also
Quote :
"“Had we won that one there’s no telling what would have happened the rest of the year. We were so close,” Amato said.

Amato said he “knew what was wrong and it was going to get fixed.”

“Had we won that Wake Forest game, we might have been able to represent the division in the conference championship game,” he said. “You’re talking about a program that hadn’t won an ACC championship since 1979. And I was bringing visions of a national championship.”

But, he said, “It doesn’t happen overnight.”"

apparently 7 years qualifies as overnight, what a fucking clown

You're a fucking clown.

Amato gave a lot to this school, even if he wasn't the best coach and sometimes looked like an idiot out there. And even though the fans, press and school turned on him after a disasterous final season, he still loves NC State and doesn't hold any grudges.

Next time you walk into Carter Finley and see the world-class facilities and expanded seating, you can thank Amato. Or you can just be a jackass.

I blame Herb for Chuck's failures. What big time football recruit would want to come to a school where he had to watch the weave and heave during the offseason?

Comments like that one piss me off. Amato's recruiting had gone down hill. He was a fucking joke. His teams played dumb as shit. Sure, he talks a good game, and thats one reason we have the facilities we enjoy today. But to act like if we had won the Wake game we would have gone to the conference championship is a bunch of crazy talk bullshit. We were 2-1 in the conference at that point, and if you're saying one loss sent this team on a fucking 7 game losing streak to end the season, then you're admitting that you cant fucking coach.

What a load of bullshit.

who gives a shit if he doesn't hold grudges, I have a grudge against him for the terrible shape he left our program in, it's fucking incredible that this clown still thinks we were in good shape after the 2006 season...he's obviously is living in denial.

right, because the football coach's job is to expand and upgrade the facilities and not to win fucking games, good one

He did some good things here, he did some shitty things here, but he is a still a wolfpacker. Move on and enjoy the direction we are heading now with our football program.

Chuck did some great things for this school, but I'd rather lose the way we do now (lack of talent) than the way we did back when he was a coach (lack of intelligence).

he won a bunch of games during the Rivers era because an excellent quarterback hid many of his deficiencies as a coach, and as soon as Rivers left the program was obviously in a death spiral. Having one or two bad seasons at the beginning of his tenure might have been acceptable, but when you start to lose 7-9 games in a season 5+ years into his tenure it's obviously a sign of terrible coaching. I appreciate the facilities upgrades and the CF expansion but to act like Chuck was the only coach who could have presided over something like that is retarded (especially with Mr. Facilities himself as AD). Look at this brilliant quote from the man himself:
Quote :
"When you’re building a program, your won-loss record, we won an average of 49 games over seven years"

I don't think he knows what an average is

Chuck did a shit ton for the program and the school. I also believe that you can put alot of that on Philip Rivers' shoulders as well, but hey, my opinion. I'll never say anything bad about Chuck as he is a good guy and would have done ANYTHING for this university. It just didn't work out in the end.

Haha LOL. Was this a cheap shot at TOB?

If that is the case, then how did he go 3-9 the year before with those players?

I'll say it again MOC>Chuck. MOC may not have recruited well or beat UNC, but he was a better in-game coach than Chuck.

Um no. A lot of the upgrades were already planned before he came on as coach. He did facilitate the process, but it wasn't a result of him and it was planned before he won a single game.

Actually no Wilson was definitely sold as a football recruit too. There were a lot of rumblings about what a sleeper pick-up Wilson would be. I remember reading things stating if he were a few inches taller (like the 6'3"-6'4") range he'd have been a 4-star, potentially even a 5-star, because he put up INSANE high school numbers just some feared his height. But I think his future will be in baseball because of his size.

i dont know what team ya'll were looking at but we still recruited very well after the loss of rivers....

we had huge qb recruits come in they just never panned out. If you blame anything, blame the fact that we recruited highly recruited talent that never panned out not not recruiting. Is it is fault Stone is a moron ?

I think everyone of our fans over estimates the amount of coaching that goes into on the field decision making. No one coached our quarterbacks to make terrible decisions and throw picks constantly, yet that is what they did. Mr. Rivers understood how not to make horrific decisions most of the time. The rest of our recruits just turned out to be Neanderthals.

More evidence being Stone turning out to be a pretty decent tight end. He was a great football player, he was just dumb as a brick

it's not like they were smart in hs and turned out to be dumb. he recruited a bunch of mongoloids, and that's what we had on the field. dumb penalties, dumb decicisions, etc...

like TOB says, stars are for hotels...you have to recruit players that fit your style, your team, your idea...not just go after every highly rated beast that can demolish fellow high schoolers, but is dumb as a brick.

funny he mentions recruiting RW. Rivers fell into his lap with the job, and that was his only key to success.

^^ and ^, They weren't "dumb" people, they were just kids who were recruited and then never coached. Amato couldn't keep a decent coordinator for more than a year. Hell, seems like he couldn't keep a shitty coordinator for more than a year. Anyway, good HS talent that isn't developed and poor decision making/penalties = COACHING. Rivers had an incredible knowledge of the game and an inate ability to make the right decisions (and he had Norm Chow for a year). Now I'm not saying they could've been great DI QB's, but don't blame Stone Jay Davis for everything and certainly don't insult them by calling them stupid; it's lack of consistency and quality at offensive coordinator and QB's coach.

Bobby Purcell deserves more credit than anyone for our facilities improvements. That Wall Street Journal article that came out a few weeks ago about him talks about how he basically would just sit and convince donors to fork over the cash.

Chuck definitely left the cupboard bare when he was fired. His last two recruiting classes were terrible.

It will be a cold day in Ecuador before I let go of 2-4 against John Bunting. I could care less about clown shoes, non qualifiers for akron, riding in on a harley, oakleys, "you people", etc etc etc....I repeat, 2-4 against John Bunting. Read any write up of Bunting's days at Chapel Hill from UNC fans, rival fans, objective journalists living in a hut thousands of miles away......and then realize that he was 2-4 against JOHN BUNTING. Still not informed about John Bunting(?) Ok Duke, the nations worst BCS team, and one of the 3 worst programs in all of DIV I oduring that 6 year span, went 1-5 against Bunting, and some of their losses over that 6 year span include 23-21, 24-21, 45-44, and 20-14 (OT)......

We did get tons of money for the program because of Amato, the man can drum up enthuisaism like no one else, course he can't coach an entire team for shit.

Maybe we should fire Fowler and put Amato in as Athletic Director.

I'm surprised no one said anything about who wrote the blog.

In all seriousness, he really is a very, very good writer.

EDIT: Well nevermind -- the original story I read came from the Orlando Sentinel and Andrew Carter was the author.
