^ It would have been if he played, obviously

But since he didn't, then maybe Ryan can get it. Of course, Roethlisberger was pretty good also.

Big Ben is definitely up there too, but he had an infinitely better cast around him

yeah, just watched the 4th quarter of that bears/falcons game, and i agree. he looks incredibly poised for a rookie. he's not putting up huge numbers (though he had 300+ yards today), but he looks comfortable and in control. matter of fact, i think he looks more seasoned than probably 2/3 of current starters, regardless of tenure.

^ i will say, though, that the falcons overall look much better than expected. the o-line is giving ryan time and opening holes for turner/norwood, the recievers are making catches, and the defense is solid. they're definitely not as good as that steelers team was, but they're much improved from last season.

Phillip Rivers is one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the NFL. If you honestly think that Phillip would have been better then Drew Brees in his rookie season then you don't know football. Phillip is an average quarterback that is surrounded by people who make plays that make him look good.

You're right. He's the only quarterback that looks better because of surrounding players. Every other quarterback is phenomenal surrounded by mediocrity.

Marino had 20 TDs for a team that threw a lot, Ryan could possibly reach that on a team that runs a shitload

he's looking ok thus far

the interesting thing is he went from a college QB in a town where people don't give a shit about NCAA football to a pro QB in a town where people don't give a fuck about the NFL

Peyton Manning has the rookie record for pass attempts, touchdowns, pass completions, most passing yards, and is just behind Roethlisberger for rookie record completion percentage. Matt Ryan is good, but he is no Manning.

and you are SURE you are speaking about Manning - as a rookie

cause it looks like you lost sight of that by the end of your post

^ I'm not sure what you are talking about, but here is what I am referring to in my post.

Quote :
"Most Pass Attempts, Rookie, Season, 575, Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, 1998
Most Pass Completions, Rookie, Season, 326, Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, 1998
Most Passing Touchdowns, Rookie, Season, 26, Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, 1998
Most Passing Yards, Rookie, Season, 3,739, Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, 1998"

Roethlisberger was an animal too though. Rookie records for both completion percent and passer rating.

its not just about stats though
its been said a lot in this thread about the qb's supporting cast

but if you want to use your stat argument anyways, how is matt ryan is tracking towards these records???

i dont disagree completely... just gotta weigh everything out

Well, in 1998, Manning's first year, the Colts were 3-13. Marshall Faulk was the only one who made the pro bowl. The surrounding cast was pretty bad.

^ yeah, I always hate it when people are like "Manning is only that good because of all the badasses around him"

Well, maybe they are badasses because of him??? Every person that has left that offense hasnt done shit anywhere else except for maybe Edge but he is nowhere near what he was at Indy. Stokley, shit, Pollard, shit, Rhodes, shit.

^^Try to stay on topic, you Peyton Manning cockstroker.

Ryan looks good so far. He's gotta watch out for the Derek Anderson principle, however. As more defenses get film on him, the tougher it'll get.

future threads:

Jim Sorgi = best QB on colts roster?
Tom Brady = most prolific tv commercial star?
Samus Aran = best laser / rocket arm?

Big Ben went 13-0 as a starter his rookie season, that's pretty hard to top. Yeah, he had a much better supporting cast, but he also did it against much better competition in the AFC.

you have to be kidding, Ryan is doing good but not that good. Rivers didnt even play his rookie year and when it comes to the playoffs and his uncorking (of course by this I mean that he is going to get corked…in the ass) of play is hilarious. Talks a lot of trash for not having a ring... Technically the most efficient rookie qb would be Big Ben (hate to say it). He is only 1 of 2 starting rookie qb's to win a playoff game

(Roethlisberger led the Steelers to victory in all of the team's 14 remaining regular season games in 2004 when replacing Maddox, giving Pittsburgh a 15-1 record and making the Steelers the first AFC team ever to win 15 games)

* I hate the steelers
