-i can get one on campus for free w/ bcbsnc
-i have never got one before
-i have only had the flu once, last year and it sucked bad. like, lay in the bed and wish you were dead bad. came down with it on friday afternoon, finally went to the doctor on sunday, flu test came back positive, was prescribed tamiflu, which made it possible to get out of bed and go to class the next week. took a week to get completely over it.

i am a relatively healthy guy...i've only been really sick once in the past 15 years, and that bitch was a 104°F fever that made me take an ice bath

growing up, my parents didn't believe in using antibacterial soap and such, because they thought kids SHOULD get sick, to help them develop a strong immune system

but the truth of the matter is that there's no PROOF that flu shots encourage the virus to mutate any more than it was going to, anyway...the flu is particularly nasty because it is susceptible to antigenic drift even without a large percentage of the population inoculated against the active strain...it is a false assumption to say that the reason flu shots must be administered annually is because the shots from the previous season caused the virus to drift for the next year

additionally, different strains of flu viruses oftentimes interact with each other (be they avian or otherwise) to create a new strain (antigenic shift)...again, inoculation has absolutely nothing to do with this

i got my flu shot for the first time this year specifically because it was free (i wouldn't have bothered otherwise, since i rarely get sick)...i didn't suffer ANY of the side effects (my arm wasn't even sore)...i say go for it...the most likely scenario is that you simply won't get sick with the flu this winter

Taking preventive action (on campus, that mainly consists of religiously washing your hands well, staying away from sick people, and touching as few common surfaces as possible - like desks, wolfline railings, door handles) will do more for you (a young healthy person) than a flu shot will (most beneficial for those with weakened or developing immune systems)

I think people get more cavalier with prevention ("Oh, I got the flu shot. I'll be fine!") having gotten a shot, because they think it's fail-safe, and then blame the shot when they do end up getting the flu.

i think that a lot of you people really don't know anything about flu shots or how they function...primarily, they are most beneficial to the groups christine identified...but they are, for the vast majority of people, beneficial as another line of defense against getting the current seasonal strain

why wouldn't someone get the shot if it's free and might keep them from getting the flu?

while nothing in this world is fool-proof and 100% safe, the possible benefits (which are very likely applicable) FAR outweigh the negative effects (which are extremely unlikely)
