Quote : | "Tiny plastic bags used to sell small quantities of heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and other drugs would be banned in Chicago, under a crackdown advanced Tuesday by a City Council committee.
Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) persuaded the Health Committee to ban possession of “self-sealing plastic bags under two inches in either height or width,” after picking up 15 of the bags on a recent Sunday afternoon stroll through a West Side park.
“We need to use every measure that we possibly can to stop it because it is destroying our kids,” he said." |

Feel good legislation at work.
Illinois is at the forefront of this type of bullshit.
They've already given the criminals the upper hand by making it difficult, if not impossible, for law abiding citizens to own and carry handguns. We all know the gangsters no longer carry guns as a result of this legislation, right?
What scares me the most is that Obama has this mindset and he could end up in that seat.
POLITICIAN: "IF WE MAKE THIS ILLEGAL, THAT WILL STOP THE CRIMINALS."
RANDOM PERSON: "HEY UH, AREN'T CRIMINALS, BY DEFINITION, PEOPLE WHO DON'T ABIDE BY THE LAW?"
POLITICIAN: "SHUT UP SON."

The mounting hardware (screws) usually comes in small baggies.
When I buy shirts, they frequently come with a small baggie of spare buttons.
Again: what does it matter if you don't have a use for little baggies? Do you think that people buying or selling heroin, crack, cocaine, marijuana, and other drugs are going to be dissuaded because small plastic baggies are illegal?

I do enjoy freedom. I was being sarcastic about how we as the US think of ourselves as the benchmark for freedom and liberty. Yet the avg American lives a day to day live restrained by all kinds of restrictions, bans, and laws. Even when the object or action targeted by the legislation has no direct impact on someone else's right to liberty and freedom. This is just another brick in the wall. The classic example are the seat belt laws.

the bags Twista linked would not fall under the ban. Even if there is a reasonable use for bags this small it is dwarfed by the actual use. Although, it's not like banning the bags will stop/curb drug use. It's probably going to make it easier to arrest or detain drug dealers though.

actually they would, since the ban would ban POSSESSION of self-sealing (ziplock) bags "under two inches in either height or width"...none of those bags are 2"x2" or larger
Quote : | "Even if there is a reasonable use for bags this small it is dwarfed by the actual use" |
I don't know if thats true or not...obviously many drugs are moved in bags like this, but there are also plenty of drugs (like the huge important-to-bust quantities) that are stored in garbage bags, cell packs, paper, etc...and the small quantities, which i assume this law is aimed to target, could easily buy larger bags, or use saran wrap, aluminum foil, the corner of a larger bag, being balled up in a piece of paper, etc
the main point is this is putting a bandaid on a severed head

The point is that nobody but drug dealers and coin collectors are using the tiny little bags. You know as well as I do that the bags you pictured are not the ones targeted. You also know that people who get arrested or detained will often speak to try to get themselves out of any perceived trouble. I don't think the ban is some fucking awesome idea, but I at least see that it has a reasonable objective. I also acknowledge that the banning of completely harmless item is terrible.

i agree with the intent of the ban, but i think its a completely pointless law...and while there are smaller bags than the ones i pictured that are obviously used for drugs, i've got some bags from hard drive screws that are probably 1" by 1.5", which would fall under the ban (btw if the bags width OR length is < 2" they're banned)...it just seems like another dumb law that won't have any practical effect...plus like many people have noted, there are plenty of other easily-available packaging options for drugs where any big dealers wouldnt have to do much
more importantly though, someone who sells drugs for the risk of 10-20-life in prison isn't gonna be deterred by a potential $1500 fine] 10/16/2008 12:48:01 AM |
