I used to work with a girl that had a ridiculously huge boner for Detroit. If anyone ever said anything remotely negative about Detroit she would flip the fuck out like you had just insulted her dead mother. "People just won't give Detroit the chance it deserves!!!"

Was she from Detroit? No. She was born and raised west of Ann Arbor. Detroit sure looks great from the comfort of the suburbs

http://www.freep.com/article/20100623/NEWS05/100623041/1319/Ground-shaking-reported-across-metro-Detroit

Quote :
"Reports of ground shaking came in this afternoon from downtown Detroit, Southfield and Troy.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported this afternoon in central Canada, the Globe and Mail reported.

The quake was recorded at 1:41 p.m. in the Ontario-Quebec border region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tony Spanke, who works at Comerica in Auburn Hills, said workers in his building felt the building swaying from right to left about 1:50 p.m. today.

While nothing fell off shelves and there appeared to be no damage, he said, “People noticed. A lot of people were discussing it.”

James Barbee said he was sitting in his car in a parking lot in Pontiac.

“It lasted about 30 seconds or something like that,” he said. “I thought maybe it was the wind, but the wind wasn’t blowing.”

"

Theres only two good things in Michigan - The auto show and the heroin.

I knew 2 guys in high school that OD'd and died with Fentanyl laced junk.

So there is a small chance I could be getting a job offer in the auto industry in the Detroit metropolitan area within the next month or two (waiting on some internal company things). If I move there, will I hate my life? Was thinking I would live in Royal Oak maybe... and I want to live somewhere that has other people plowing the snow and shit (parking garage?).

depending on if you already know people here, it wont be too bad. Initially i dint know anyone and was too scurred to venture anywhere. Now i know the place and know lots of peeps, its a lot of fun!

Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, Berkley, troy, West bloomfield, bloomfield hills, farmington hills, novi, st. claires shores, grosse pointe are all pretty nice places to live. If you want any info, let me know

If I do get a job offer, I wouldn't know anybody there. All I know are people in Raleigh who left Michigan because it was cold and had no jobs. I will update this thread if I get an offer.

Still waiting to hear whether this position will open up... last I heard from my contact a few days ago is that it has gotten preliminary approval to get funded. Then I will be on their short list and have an interview with them in the next couple months. There's also another long-shot position at this company that I might get an interview. It's still a 50/50 chance at best that I would be moving out there.

Meanwhile I have been thinking about how I would move out there... if I did, it would probably be 1st quarter 2012. And it's gonna be super cold with snow everywhere, and I won't know where I want to live or anything.

I have lived in Raleigh since 1999. I don't know anybody there and it would be a huge adjustment. I have mixed feelings about it. My current career situation isn't doing so hot in Raleigh though so if I get an opportunity at acceptable pay I'm going to take it.

It's official... I am moving to Detroit/Detroit area on January 2nd. I don't know where I'm going to live and I'm not getting relocation expenses (working for a contract company) so I'm not flying out there beforehand. Pretty much I'm driving out there on the 2nd with my Corolla filled with some shit. I'm leaving my shitty furniture behind and going to buy some shit when I get there.

My job is in Farmington Hills. Some part of me has a romantic notion of living in Detroit and being one the people who are turning it around. One thing I'm trying to figure out is if there are any places I could live where I can walk to places. I know there is the eleveated trains/people mover downtown.

Realistically I will probably hunt Craigslist for a sublease type of deal for the first few months I'm there. I don't want to be tied down on a lease initially. I do want to start making some friends soon after I get there, so living in some isolated suburban area doesn't sound like a good idea.

yay! congrats on the job. Farmington hills and novi are great areas with lot of fun stuff to do around. Lot of people who work for my company live in farmington hills area. I know some people also live in Ann Arbor and travel to farmington hills for work. Its about 30 miles (same as detroit downtown)

About living in detroit, lot of young people are moving back to the city. Blue cross and quicken loans recently moved all their suburban offices to downtown. Blue cross is giving upto 20k for employees who buy a house in downtown and upto some amount (if you i think 3k a year but i am not sure) rent a place in downtown. you can pm me for info about downtown living or for any other questions.

you can join and connect with alumni here
Kim Goolsby is pretty active alum.
