second gen has built in speaker, is a bit thinner, and has an integrated Nike iPod receiver. It also comes in larger storage sizes, and I think has a longer battery life. And it has hardware volume buttons too, which I don't think the first gen had.

instead of NOT having a button on the side to adjust volume, there's a button on the side to adjust volume.

Yeah, same storage capacities as the last of the 1st gen ones, but a few more features. Speaker, mic, nike crap, volume button.

If you don't care about those things and can get a 1st gen one with the 2.0.1 software or newer, then you'll get the software related upgrades free. Since I've seen the 8gb 1st gen touches with that software for as low as 140 bucks... it's tempting.

Technically it's actually thicker, but the 2nd gen is more roundish so it looks thinner. I highly recommend the 2nd gen one. The volume buttons and speaker are a necessity. If you want to show people videos, or use some of the apps the speaker is needed. Plus it just looks slicker.

-oh and side note: Get "Galcon." It's the only game you'll ever need for it. The online 4-player games are so much fun, plus they rank you online. http://www.galcon.com

even so, they're both thin as shit.
Go play with one at the Apple Store - you will be amazed at how thin it actually is.

You can use the mic and a cheap VOIP service to make wifi calls using the new one, which would be awesome.

hardware volume is what I really wish I had on my 1st gen

^^it's all about the online play. Like I said. You haven't really played galcon until you play versus three other people.
