so i dont understand how this "limited distribution" business works. why wouldnt a film production company want their films to play in every major city?
looking at the official site, they've got a weird distribution scheme, and Raleigh NC is not on it. but podunk little towns like Paducah KY and Dubuque IA are.
http://www.magpictures.com/dates.aspx?id=3f16c245-97bb-4978-bbb8-f754d4f32785
so according to their website, Galaxy is not going to get this film. you either have to go to CLT or ATL or DC 11/16/2008 6:50:03 PM |

^ I've wondered the exact same thing myself. I know absolutely nothing about the movie industry but the distribution of this film seems odd as hell. However, I did go to the Galaxy webpage and they have this film listed in their upcoming section.

This is how independent film distribution works. Yeah, if you're releasing a big mainstream movie, you're going to push it out to 3000+ theaters and that's an economic movie that works. Let the Right One In, however, is not a big movie. It did about $5000 per screen on 17 screens nationwide last weekend, and, if I had to guess, it'll do about $1000 per screen if it's at three or four screens (at most) in the triangle. There are a small number of people who will go and see this movie. That's just the way it is.
Your average mass produced 90 minute film print can cost upwards of $1500. Even ignoring the opportunity cost of showing a film this small--something most mainstream theaters wouldn't even bother with--the distributor is going to work with the smallest number of prints possible to maximize their profits.
And that, my friends, is why Galaxy isn't getting this shit for another couple of weeks.11/16/2008 9:36:36 PM |

the hell they aren't. You ever been there? I've been to Dubuque IA ... the entire county has a smaller population than the Town of Cary. Paducah KY? this little shitstop has a population of 28,000. Yeah that's about the size of the greater Apex NC metro area
i dont care if your grandma lives there or what, im sure they're nice little villages. but why they get on the distribution list and the entire 1,000,000 population Triangle area doesnt --- i dont get it.11/18/2008 1:29:15 AM |

i wish films that had limited release paired it with a digital release. i am lucky that i live in a market that will be screening the film, but there is already a high quality torrent online so if i was not i would have to steal the movie when i would otherwise pay for it. (of course i wouldn't have to, but it would be the only way i would be able to see it) 12/1/2008 3:03:38 PM |

^^ In general, yes it is. A LOT of words are very similar to their english equivalent. The problem arises in how they say things in common usage. Word order and choice are often different. If you have an understanding of English and German, Swedish would be a breeze. 12/2/2008 11:10:04 AM |

I think the story was really weird, and it kept me interested in it through out. I think a lot of the audience might not even pick up on some of the more subtle things. I don't want to spoil anything, but my roommate and I were just discussing this film and he didn't catch a subplot at all. 12/2/2008 8:39:39 PM |
pooljobs All American 3481 Posts user info edit post |

i think he's confusing "subplot" with "plot" 12/2/2008 11:22:52 PM |
Thorsten All American 1809 Posts user info edit post |
I guess subplot wasn't the best word. I'll explain...
***************************SPOILER ALERT************************************* (Highlight to read)
He asked me how I think the American audience will react to a somewhat nude flash of the 12yr old girl vampire and I was like, "well, it didn't really show much but yeah that was weird and I'm kinda surprised they didn't have to edit it out... but you know the purpose behind it, right?"
and he said he thought it was just because he wanted to take a peek at the her but I explained that it was really because he wasn't that sure if she was a girl or not. She said to him multiple times "I'm not a girl" (because she's a vampire and a not a normal girl) and he always replied with something like, "ok". And I explained that I think it has a lot to do with him questioning his own sexuality. Especially since it's hinted that his dad is gay by the phone conversation he walked in on when his mom is yelling, "so you want me to just tell him his father is dead to him" (assuming he said something like he is moving on with his male lover?) and when he visits his father his "friend" comes over and they get drunk and it gets weird, which caused Oskar to just leave and hitchhike back home.
Basically my roommate didn't pick up on any of that and agreed with me. I think it's open to interpretation but that's what I got out of it. I think it adds a lot more to the story. Maybe I read too much into it, or maybe it's a lot more obvious to everyone else?

^^ it would be one thing, if the movie had been out for a week or two.
but you've ripped a copy off the internets and proceed to discuss the finer plot points the whole got-dam surprise ending on a general-interest forum, before the movie has even opened at the local heater.
seriously, if you can't see how much of a dickhead move that is, i can't help you.

eh, i disagree.
what he described in the spoiler, as it became apparent to viewers at the end, completely changed my perception of events throughout the movie. it's one of the major parts that has been indelibly imprinted onto my memory.
well that, and the cats, of course ...
Quote : | "hey, first off, I didn't rip it or steal the movie" |
okay, whatever, an advanced copy. my point was not about IP rights, but rather about giving people a fair chance to see it before they inadvertently read spoilers. if the movie had been out for a while, it would be fine... but really, it's kind of hard to ignore a spoiler and resulting comments when you have to scroll past it multiple times in an inline discussion.
