i have an undersink inline water filter for my bathroom
it came with these push-in compression fittings for the 3/8ths inlets on the filter and for the connector to the sink
the only connection i have left is to the stop valve coming out of the wall
it has a 3/8ths outlet... they included a compression fitting (it was a thing that went in the tube along with a plastic ferrule and a 3/8ths nut... it kept leaking for some reason (no, i didn't overtighten it).
what would you guys recommend that i get to make this connection? do they sell those push-to-connect connectors that fit onto the stop valve?
halp plz 10/20/2008 11:46:15 PM |

I'm really not sure, evan don't you rent your house? (I can't imagine that you've bought one this early in your life)
if you do rent, then it's not your problem. Call your landlord and tell him to call a plumber 10/20/2008 11:50:08 PM |

i'd do that, but i'm not sure they're going to be too eager to help me out in putting a water filter in 10/20/2008 11:50:51 PM |

oh whoops, I completely glossed over that part
my bad. I'm no help to you.
maybe you can try finding a rubberized fitting for the valve, soak it in water over night, and then put it on? 10/20/2008 11:54:13 PM |

Can you over tighten compression fittings? I used one when hooking up my dishwasher and I had to make it ridiculously tight to keep it from leaking. It took the biggest channel lock pliers I could find and really wrenching the hell out of it to get it tight enough to not leak.
But the best way to do it is to get the same size plain copper fitting, some solder, and a propane torch to solder them together. Clean the pipe ends with emery cloth. It's a lot easier than you'd think. Just do a couple of test solders before doing the real deal.

get a kit with a brass (or whatever metal they have) ferrule
put ferrule on tube use a lighter to melt very tip of tube, wedge something in to expand the end (note most plastic tubes naturally curl back, so no wedging needed), while the tube is still melted, push the metal ferrule to the end of the tube so it "fuses" on.
Tightly connect the nut to the outlet.

it sounds like it would work, i'll try it tomorrow... what do you recommend i wedge in the tube?
i think the problem with the first one was the plastic ferrule] 10/21/2008 12:08:05 AM |

I edited, but you shouldn't have to actually wedge anything in the tube, IME, the tube will naturall curl back. It also takes VERY little heat to cause this, once the flame is going, it shouldn't take more than a second or 2 (assuming line is vacated of water) to cause it to curl back enough.
Obviously, you're using a plastic tube, so if you mess up, just cut it and try again.
You could also probably wrap some teflon tape around the plastic ferrule and make it work, but it's not as "nice" of a solution.

i was under the impression that it was actually a bad idea to use teflon tape on compression fittings because the nut isn't what seals, it's the ferrule 10/21/2008 11:45:08 AM |
