I'll start... (physicist btw, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people on this thread actually get these)

we already have an xkcd thread, also you didn't post the comments on the comics.

I laughed so freaking hard on that one... I dunno how old it is but I definitely sent it to all of my embedded programming buddies

On a lower level, though some still don't get them. Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, "Hey, I think I lost my electron." The other asks, "Are you sure?" Answer: "Of course, I'm positive!"And one I've wanted to try, but it'll only be funny to me:A cop pulls a guy over and asks for license and registration. "Sir, do you know how fast you were going?" Answer: "Not really, but I know exactly where I am."

^ Why? Are you the only one smart/educated enough to know the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle?I got them all, except for the last 2 xkcd ones... someone please explain!Oh, and I fucking love this one... and also, it is my username!

^^ Ah ok, sorry I misunderstood you when you said it would only be funny to you.Someone please explain the last 2 xkcd comics, the one with the green fingers and the the sudo.
10/22/2008 5:50:24 AM
'sudo' is a unix command that basically allows the current user to "go over the head" of their permissions...so if a particular command doesn't work, in some situations putting sudo in front of the command will default to a greater permission base and the command will executethe fingers in the other comic represent a double forward-slash, //, which is the lazy way to comment out a line of text in some languages. a commented line is not compiled (invisible to the computer), and many source code editors will color the line green to more easily differentiate it from active code$1[Edited on October 22, 2008 at 6:18 AM. sudo is actually "su do" which is actually "super user do"su has absolute and complete control over the system. if you tell your computer to "rm *.*" it will tell you to blow it out your ass, because you're about to delete the entire system, you ass. if you tell it to "sudo rm *.*" it will be forced to comply and will delete everything until it crashes itself. One of my favorites (I've only had one person laugh at this in person (agentlion), everybody else just stares at me and walks away):A statistician, a biologist, and a mathematician were sitting outside a coffee house one day watching people walk by. They see 2 people walk into the building across the street. "Hmmm, interesting," they all say. A few minutes later, they see 3 people walk out of that building. "Whoah! How can that be?" they ask.The statistician answers first. "It's obvious what the problem was. Our initial count was flawed.""No, I don't think that's it," says the biologist. "Our initial count was correct. I think there was some sort of reproduction taking place inside the building."The mathematician chuckles to both of them. "I don't care what either of you say. I say that if one more person goes in that building, it'll be empty again!"

maybe he laughed just to be polite.I get it, but it's not funny.

HAHHAHHAHAHHAHAthey're all wrong. the chemist would say: "Obviously, the original two were returning to the ground state. Enough activation energy has been put in to excite three people out of the ground state."

Thanks for the explanation of sudo and the green fingers. It has been a while since I studied comp sci at uni (last course in 1999).I vaguely remember the sudo now. As for the commenting in code, I remember it now. But, my compiler never coloured in in green, as far as a I remember.
