After rumors based on corporate cooperation, speculation about job postings, and even an outright acknowledgement by n high-ranking executive, LucasArts and BioWare have finally officially announced their joint massively-multiplayer online game at an event in San Francisco today. Titled Star Wars: The Old Republic, the new game is the first MMO for BioWare and the second Star Wars MMO for LucasArts." |

Haven't had time to read the article yet, but the title "The Old Republic" makes it sound like it's going to be based around the timeline of KotOR more so than the timeline of the movies (a difference of 2000 to 4000 years if I recall correctly).
Should be pretty good, but as much as I love Bioware I'm about sick of MMOs. 10/22/2008 2:36:22 AM |

I hope they bring back player housing and an awesome resource harvesting and player economy like in SWG.
I had an architect and that was surprisingly the most fun I've had in an MMO.... 10/23/2008 9:04:19 AM |

yep, once everyone started crying because jedi were supposed to be rare, but they all wanted to be jedi without figuring out how to become one, they lost a ton of players
such a shame10/23/2008 9:16:37 AM |

I spent almost all my time in SWG gathering resources, setting up factories and spitting out top tier armor in bulk. I also had a 2nd account which was a automated buff doctor haha...I had tons of money and ran out of shit to buy lol. 10/23/2008 1:49:16 PM |

thats when you buy yourself a guild hall and get to the decorating, i saw some insane shit in the guild halls i went through
giant krayt dragon (i think thats what they were called) skeletons, droids in every color, armor and weapon collections, etc...anything you could show off
i had a crate of pre-nerf pistoleer weapons that i later traded for a ship once the expansion came out 10/23/2008 2:09:51 PM |

i really need to stop reading about the game. especially since it wont be out anytime soon.
Quote : | "t's important to note that a character's Light Side or Dark Side orientation is completely independent of their alliance with the Republic or the Empire and can even change during the course of the game. So it's possible to be a Light Side Jedi working within the Sith Empire, just as it's possible to be a Dark Side Jedi working within the Republic. In fact, the designers hope to highlight the notion of being a good person in a bad environment or a bad person in a good environment. The point is that the decision to commit good acts will be made more meaningful because of the near and present opportunity to be rewarded for committing evil. " |

That's kinda weird, a light side jedi in the Sith? eh? I haven't read any Star Wars books, but in the KOTOR games, seems a bit contrary. I understand a dark side jedi working for the Republic, but not the other way around. 10/23/2008 2:43:16 PM |

well in the same article on ign it talks about npc's giving out different missions according to your class and missions so if you're a dark jedi they're not gonna ask you to help them gather some farm materials
i think a dark jedi on the republic would be in charge of doing the dirty work noone else wants and a light jedi on the sith side would be in charge of some acts of self sacrifice or something equally uncapable for a selfish dark jedi
i could see myself as a light jedi on the sith side, i had no combat abilities in swg, just healing and crafting 10/23/2008 3:02:29 PM |

Shit better not just be a multiplayer KOTOR3, which is how it is sounding. I need crafting, player-driven economy, etc. to keep me entertained. 10/23/2008 4:32:52 PM |

I also need a player economy. And not the crap thats in WoW. In my opinion SWG crushes WoW when it comes to crafting and player economy.10/23/2008 4:34:28 PM |

IMO crafting is stupid in a Sci-fi game.
Custom modification is cool, but Joe Mercenary taking a hunk of space iron and a krayt dragon egg and making an awesome blaster out of it sounds ridiculous. 10/23/2008 6:16:48 PM |

^^What if I dont want to play Joe Mercenary and want to play Slackerb the Crafter?
I mean, someone still has to make the shit people use, just like other games. I don't see why Sci-Fi and crafting should contradict... 10/24/2008 1:57:53 PM |

thats what i call a FPS or RPG. MMO should be player driven in all retrospects with NPC's of course for quests etc. But the entire economy system and the ability of players to build their own towns in SWG is what sold me. I think maybe it was ahead of its time in combination with a few other things like jedi's that ruined the game and lost a huge fan base. Everyone plays MMO's for a different reason...which is why they generally give you a large character selection. The whole point is to be whatever it is you want...some people enjoy tanking and battling it out others enjoy crafting and making money.10/24/2008 2:54:53 PM |
