this article really hits home to me.

I have no interest or care for social conservatism, yet that is face of my party. the intellectual and logical tenents of Republican thinking have been pushed aside in favor of 'joe sixpack' and singing the 10 commandments from the town square.

the Republican party needs to drift towards the libertarian and away from the religious nut bags.

i couldn't agree more. My brother is a life long republican but is switching to vote for Obama this year just to sideline the republican party if for nothing else so that they rethink their priorities. He's keeping his party ID though, so we'll see what happens. My dad is enraged, he's as die hard as they come.

I'm sure if anyone's read my posts you could guess which way I lean.

I definitely think the republican party's current form of blasting everyone intellectual as being elite, discounting if not abandoning the coastlines, questioning patriotism left and right, playing to evangelicals and lee greenwood fans, wielding fear (rove politics) and so forth really pushes indies from caring too much about them, and new voter registration is strongly favoring democrats.

I personally would be FAR more responsive to a more intellectual, fiscal conservative base. I agree to the point above, they should be more like the libertarian party and dump all their social issues and take up something bold like proposing Fair Tax plan (and consider putting some one a bit more competent out there).
