This is a piggy back off of message_topic.aspx?topic=534963&page=1 but for Linux.

Here are my fav ones:
amarok

I'm gonna have to point out that like 80% of the apps mentioned in this thread have win32 builds

How about explanations about what these apps do and why you like them.

why, I'm glad you asked!

distccd - distributed C compiler -- or rather abstraction layer -- that just works in nearly all cases, and with correctly assembled supporting toolchains is even capable of distributed compilation across dissimilar architectures

rtorrent - console BitTorrent client that is the reference client implementation for libtorrent, and quite possibly the best torrent client on any platform

screen - console session manager, allows you to mux a terminal, detach and background the session, disconnect, reconnect, resume the session without interruption -- altogether an incredibly useful tool

mpd - music player daemon, allows you to construct and manage remote playlists and remote playback, supports Icecast/Shoutcast output and combined with that allows one to transcode, stream, and manipulate a remote music collection as if it were local, saves many gigglebytes on the laptop

portage - Gentoo's package database and associated toolset, not only is it useful in it's current form but I see a huge opportunity for an incremental improvement, by adding a configuration management tool and combining the two into a toolset for repeatably producing pre-configured installable images. I mention it separate of Gentoo because several other distros (not just Gentoo-derived distros) offer some level of integration with the package database, and other toolsets are available for the package database as well.

I would also like to add:

Icecast - Shoutcast-like streaming music server that also supports streaming FLAC, Vorbis and probably other formats

StreamTranscoder - companion utility for Icecast that allows realtime transcoding and restreaming, I use it to transcode a "HD" 480kbps-centered vbr ogg/vorbis stream that I only have bandwidth for on my LAN to a 128kbps cbr mp3 stream that I can push even to my cell phone, and is a lot simpler to link non-technical users to than an ogg/vobris stream

Enlightenment DR16 - awesome and freakishly lightweight window manager, my #1 choice for X sessions that I intend to access remotely

Enlightenment DR17 - an even more awesome window manager, leaning towards desktop environment. It's not quite as lightweight as DR16 and is currently in active development, must be built from SVN for best results... even so it blows literally everything else away when it comes to resource utilization to eye candy ratio, and that's with it's software rendering engine. It also has a GL-accelerated rendering engine that is slightly less stable and produces output not quite as refined as the software renderer, but shows much promise. #1 choice for local X sessions by a margin that is difficult to quantify.

Anjuta - the only IDE I've encountered that attempts to provide an interface for the mess known as autoconf/automake. even "stable" releases have been rough in my experience, but this one shows much promise as well and has become more refined over the last couple years I've used it.

MORE TO COME, I'm sure, and I will limit my posts to software that is only available or relevant on *nix platforms as I think other users of the thread should as well
