The legacy of the 2008 presidential election will be the "Palin Defect." The majority of independent swing voters who are on the fence about whether to vote for John McCain or Barack Obama will ultimately choose Obama in the voting booth because of Sarah Palin.

Palin is just completely unqualified to be the vice president; her views are divisive, her knowledge base is laughable and she is downright dangerous for our country. Sarah Palin would be a heartbeat away from a president who would be 72 years old with a history of melanoma and with what clearly seems to be her own separate agenda. Voters will be reassured in their vote for Barack Obama by his much more reasoned and thoughtful selection of Joe Biden as his VP.

The Palin Defect dictates that: (1) the choice of a vice presidential running mate actually does matter and selecting a mate perceived as unqualified has real consequences; and (2) failure of the first real public test of a candidate's decision-making process, priorities, and judgment in the act of selecting a running mate can prove fatal to a candidate's prospects.

McCain = SELFPWNT.

I really can't disagree with this.

It'd be a much tighter race if his VP selection process lasted more than 3 minutes.

this is really some SB shit, but...

the biggest damning effect of choosing Palin was that McCain said in the past that he doesn't know jackshit about the economy and that the running mate he picked would have to be an expert. good move, McCain.

The GOP ship is sinking and Captain McCain will go down with the ship, while Palin is loading the lifeboats by "going rogue."

"a heartbeat away" - I think you're misunderstanding this popular turn of phrase. The usage isn't suggesting that a heartbeat is in anyway a measure of distance and Palin being a heartbeat away from the president really means away from the presidency not the physical (albeit elderly) president, were McCain to win.

who do you really think the 10% of "undecided" votes are voting for?

they just dont want to listen to some idiot who watched a bad obama infomercial explain why its so important that they run out and vote for the messiah

obama needed to be up by 10+ points in the polls to pull this off, he isnt even close

anyone that thinks Palin is smarter than Obama may just be the dumbest motherfucker on this board

^ might want to look at electoral polls.. i got this from another board, but it's worth reposting here just so you dumbasses stfu about today's drudge report:

McCain has a 1 point lead!!!!!! He's winning!!!!! McCain is WINNING!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you look at the ABC/Washington Post poll, where he's down 9. Or the AP-Yahoo poll where he's down 7. Or the Battleground poll where he's down 4. Or the Diageo/Hotline poll where he's down 7. Or the Gallup poll where he's down 9. Or the Harris Interactive poll where he's down 6. Or the IBD/TIPP poll where he's down 4.4. Or the Marist poll where he's down 7. Or the Rasmussen poll where he's down 4. Or the Research 2000 poll where he's down 8. Or the other Zogby poll, where he's down 7.

Hmm...perhaps McCain isn't doing too well after all. But wait! We don't elect based on popular vote - we use the electoral college! Maybe McCain can still win with the right combination of states. Let's see, Bush had 286 electoral votes (16 more than the requisite 270) to win in 2004. What states did he win that are close this year? Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina...as long as he's doing well in most of those states, he should be good to go. So, let's see how the last few polls are looking.

Colorado - Obama up 7, Obama up 6, Obama up 8, Obama up 4.
Nevada - Obama up 7, Obama up 5, Obama up 4, Obama up 7, Obama up 10.
Iowa - Obama up 15, Obama up 10, Obama up 8, Obama up 11.
Florida - Obama up 4, Obama up 4, Obama up 7, Obama up 4, Tied, Obama up 5, Obama up 2, Obama up 2.
Ohio - Obama up 4, Obama up 4, Obama up 9, Obama up 4, Obama up 7, Obama up 3, Obama up 5, Obama up 9, Obama up 7.
Virginia - Obama up 4, Obama up 4, Obama up 9, Obama up 4, Obama up 9, Obama up 7, Obama up 7, Obama up 8.
North Carolina - Tie, Obama up 2, Obama up 6, Obama up 4, Obama up 4, Obama up 2.

Well, that doesn't look too good for McCain. Of course, even if he loses some of these states, he could still make up ground by winning some of the states Kerry won. Let's see, where did Kerry win by only a few points (let's say about 4 points or less)...Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan. How's McCain doing in those states in recent polls?

Pennsylvania - McCain down 10, McCain down 4, McCain down 7, McCain down 12, McCain down 14, McCain down 9.
Minnesota - McCain down 12, McCain down 8, McCain down 19.
New Hampshire - McCain down 7, McCain down 11, McCain down 14, McCain down 7, McCain down 15, McCain down 13.
Wisconsin - McCain down 16, McCain down 11, McCain down 7
Oregon - McCain down 19, McCain down 14.
Michigan - McCain down 12, McCain down 10.

Hmm...this makes no sense. The Drudge headline makes it seem like McCain is winning. All this other polling data makes it seem like Obama is in pretty good shape. The Real Clear Politics average of polls puts Obama at 311 electoral votes - and that's without toss up states like North Carolina or Florida (or Indiana, Arizona, Montana, North Dakota, Missouri, and Georgia - 6 states Bush won by an average of about 17 points in 2004).

I guess all these other people must be wrong. Matt Drudge would never steer his loyal readers wrong with a right-leaning headline, would he?

Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

1. Assume McCain dies: The Result = a Palin Presidency.
2. Assume Obama dies: The Result = a Biden Presidency.

Which is safer? Think about it.

If you click the article, McCain doesn't actually have a 1 point lead, i'm not sure where Drudge is getting that from.

he's within the margin of error of the poll, and I guess they're extrapolating that to mean "maybe this is how it actually is" kind of thing.
