Crimson Skies is quite good... if you don't mind the extremely dated graphics that is. Shouldn't be hard to find a torrent of it, either.

The flight physics aren't quite as realistic as actual flight sims, but it's not dumbed down to a console-gaming level of flight combat, either. I'd say they keep a good balance between realism and action/excitement.

Microsoft's combat flight simulator series was fun back in the day, if you're ok with the whole sim part, which is adjustable of course. (Also that is set in WWII) The IL-2 Sturmovik series I have heard is also excellent in that respect.

^holy shit, THAT'S what the game was called.

I love that game so much but I haven't been able to remember the name of it ever since it came up in a conversation ~8 months ago. THANK YOU simonn. You are a god amongst men.

X-Wing Alliance was the last in the series and was much improved graphically, but yes, that was a great game

Aces Over Europe was fun back in the day. I think there was also Aces of the Pacific.

I really wish they would remake Tie Fighter.

CYAC
Gunship & Gunship 2000
F-19
F-15 Strike Eagle II

[Edited on November 2, 2008 at 10:47 PM. Reason : Xwing vs TIE and Xwing weren't nearly as good as TIE Fighter.]

When I was younger, I thought those Janes simulation series were the best things to ever play. At my age, they were way too advanced for me and I couldn't really do anything, but I had always hoped that they would continue to churn out these type of combat simulation games.

Too bad they never really did. I can't remember the last good combat simulation game unless you look at ace combat for video game consoles.

I used to play the hell out of some Janes ATF, Janes Longbow series, and a Warbirds demo/offline stuff. I dunno how good any of those would be today though.

I would kill to have a working copy of this on my computer right now, but alas it doesn't play well with XP.

ATF GOLD was the flight sim back in the day, I loved that game and I think I found a patch recently to get it to work on XP but I haven't tried it yet.

My only copies of TIE Fighter are on 3.5" floppies under my bed at my parents' house

X-Wing Alliance almost works fine on XP.
It's pretty tough with my crappy gamepad instead of a joystick.

There's an opensource Battlestar Galactica mod of Freespace2 called Beyond the Red Line
I tried it out and looked like it would be pretty fun...if it weren't freaking impossible.

To be fair, it's just a demo, a proof of concept, really.
