I'm not sick, but I don't get personal days, just sick days, and I really want to take tomorrow off. I'd rather send an e-mail in the morning to avoid a conversation or leaving a rambling voicemail message. Who has sent an e-mail instead of calling their boss to claim illness? Did it work or did they get suspicious?
11/3/2008 9:19:33 PM
that's pretty much SOP in my office

yes.[Edited on November 3, 2008 at 9:20 PM. Reason : actually I called in "working from home for the day"]
11/3/2008 9:20:14 PM
"call in" viaemail?
11/3/2008 9:20:16 PM
unprofessional imo
11/3/2008 9:20:40 PM
i did but that cuz i hated my "boss" and he knew i was lying but couldnt do shit about it so then we just wrote several nasty emails back and forth for a day or two
11/3/2008 9:20:48 PM
i've done it, i emailed at 6am saying i was sick as shit and going back to bed but i really was sick as shit and went in at noon still kinda sick
11/3/2008 9:20:52 PM
<--- Has called in sick via e-mail.

Works better if you don't email them at 2:15am and say:I feel great right now, but by tomorrow morning I am going to be hugging the toilet and I prefer to do that at home.
11/3/2008 9:21:11 PM
^ i've seen some that go into that much detail
11/3/2008 9:21:48 PM
thats the only way i 'call' in sickvia email that isi just CC a few people so that everyone gets the message, i haven't 'faked' a sickness though, its just i get up earlier than anyone i would be calling would get to work[Edited on November 3, 2008 at 9:23 PM. Reason : ]

I've quit jobs via e-mail beforethe shits I give can be counted on zero hands
11/3/2008 9:22:38 PM
but my shit did look like pea soup mixed with blood.
11/3/2008 9:22:44 PM
it does seem like e-mail might be easier, faster, more convient...
11/3/2008 9:23:12 PM
nothing wrong with an email, but a phone call is so much easier.
11/3/2008 9:23:27 PM
do both!
11/3/2008 9:23:31 PM
wife did it this morning - it's common for both of us to email as opposed to call to take a sick day
11/3/2008 9:23:33 PM

^^OOOOHHHSNAP^ one of my previous jobs officially had a policy where you had to call in, but they'd then dispatch an e-mailobviously that didn't apply to me, because no rules do, but I always thought that was odd[Edited on November 3, 2008 at 9:25 PM. Reason : ^]

11/3/2008 9:26:00 PM
^same hereit's awesome
11/3/2008 9:26:53 PM
I have. I have also called in late via e-mail. I have also called in late only to find out I have missed work and to find out I don't have work.
11/3/2008 9:29:48 PM
11/3/2008 9:32:15 PM
definitely have emailed in sick. It's SOP and I cc need to know coworkers. Also, I call later in the morning to make sure it was received. Also, I've actually been sick...My favorite call in was my "I'll be an hour and a half late" email bc our flight from NYC was delayed until 1 am...my fiance took a pic of the departure board with his iPhone and sent it as attachment.[Edited on November 3, 2008 at 9:35 PM. Reason : sick]
11/3/2008 9:33:12 PM
i've done it once. but that's because i get to work over an hour before anyone else.
11/3/2008 9:53:42 PM
I've got "FYI: I'll be working from home today" as a saved message on outlook that I can pump out without having to type it outI use it once or twice a month
11/3/2008 9:56:46 PM
Never e-mailed in sick, but I have texted in sick.

if you're talking need to know co-workers yes, I send out an email. Personally I would still call my immediate supervisor though to let him know I am not coming in. But thats just me and i guess it really comes down to what you feel your boss or office deems as acceptable. My boss would probably never bat an eye if I emailed instead of called but I just feel better when I tell people certain things instead of just sending an email.
11/3/2008 10:34:13 PM
when i worked at build a bear in college i used to call in pretty much every weekend of my senior year because i was too drunk to come to work
11/3/2008 10:36:04 PM
i send an email as soon as i know, then call in the morning. people don't check voicemail right away but they usually check emails as soon as they get to the desk.
11/3/2008 10:37:54 PM
yes, i do this
11/4/2008 11:29:35 AM
all the time
11/4/2008 11:31:53 AM
both, call is preferred but email notice is acceptable (has to be before start of workday)
11/4/2008 11:33:43 AM
I'm the one that gets the emails for people being out sick I on the other hand just call the 3 people I usually do stuff for to let them know.
