I'm not sick, but I don't get personal days, just sick days, and I really want to take tomorrow off. I'd rather send an e-mail in the morning to avoid a conversation or leaving a rambling voicemail message. Who has sent an e-mail instead of calling their boss to claim illness? Did it work or did they get suspicious?

same here, it's also easier to keep track of email rather than phone calls

Works better if you don't email them at 2:15am and say:

I feel great right now, but by tomorrow morning I am going to be hugging the toilet and I prefer to do that at home.

thats the only way i 'call' in sick

via email that is

i just CC a few people so that everyone gets the message, i haven't 'faked' a sickness though, its just i get up earlier than anyone i would be calling would get to work

nothing wrong with an email, but a phone call is so much easier.

wife did it this morning - it's common for both of us to email as opposed to call to take a sick day

^^OOOOHHH

SNAP

^ one of my previous jobs officially had a policy where you had to call in, but they'd then dispatch an e-mail

obviously that didn't apply to me, because no rules do, but I always thought that was odd

I have. I have also called in late via e-mail. I have also called in late only to find out I have missed work and to find out I don't have work.

I think the only time I have actually called in when was I had mono, thought I could work, said I would work, and then, around 230 or 3, realized there was no way in hell that I could work. I start at 4. I called on my way home from class.

Oh, and one really bad hangover.

definitely have emailed in sick. It's SOP and I cc need to know coworkers. Also, I call later in the morning to make sure it was received. Also, I've actually been sick...

My favorite call in was my "I'll be an hour and a half late" email bc our flight from NYC was delayed until 1 am...my fiance took a pic of the departure board with his iPhone and sent it as attachment.

I've got "FYI: I'll be working from home today" as a saved message on outlook that I can pump out without having to type it out

I use it once or twice a month

save for the guy who drunkenly called in sick at 11:30pm the night before (monday night football). evidently he didn't get the memo

if you're talking need to know co-workers yes, I send out an email. Personally I would still call my immediate supervisor though to let him know I am not coming in. But thats just me and i guess it really comes down to what you feel your boss or office deems as acceptable. My boss would probably never bat an eye if I emailed instead of called but I just feel better when I tell people certain things instead of just sending an email.

i send an email as soon as i know, then call in the morning. people don't check voicemail right away but they usually check emails as soon as they get to the desk.

I'm the one that gets the emails for people being out sick

I on the other hand just call the 3 people I usually do stuff for to let them know.
