To flush the toilet, the handle pulls the rectangular frame above up. A thin rubber/plastic diaphragm sheet pushes water into the tube, forming a siphon. The diaphragm then folds up allowing water to rush past and into the bowl.
The benefit is that when the rubber diaphragm finally breaks, the toilet doesn't run and waste water. It just doesn't flush any more. The downside, apparently, is that you have to empty the tank with a coffee cup and remove it to change the diaphragm.
Also, they still use the old-fashioned ballcock on a stick style inlet valve.

Britain has certainly fallen far from its former perch atop the bathroom technology heap. Yup, you're almost better off shitting directly into a hole in the floor like they do in Indonesia or India than using one of those crazy flapper-less Anglo toilets. 11/4/2008 12:16:52 AM |

The siphon valve has it's own elegance, I suppose, but they also require a separate overflow line going into the wall, since it can't have the integrated overflow tube that flapper toilets have. 11/4/2008 12:22:37 AM |

Elegant nothing, it's an inferior design.
On an only somewhat related note, check out some of the ways that the controls for automobiles used to designed before we finally struck upon our current layout. 11/4/2008 12:24:42 AM |

nothing new here. basically just a commercial style flush valve adapted to a conventional toilet. 11/4/2008 12:41:05 AM |

I'm not aware of a commercial toilet that siphons from the holding tank. I thought most commercial toilets use a simple valve that let's the full water pressure through for a timed period.
