I happened to pick up a Halon 1211 bottle (about 20" tall) that hasn't been inspected since 2005 that's coming out of a building that's being torn down. From my understanding, Halon was outlawed a while ago because of the CFC thing... So what should I do with it? The pressure gauge is still in the green and reads a little less than 175 psi.
Here's what I've read: http://www.fm200.biz/halon.htm
Quote : | "Recovered, recycled or reclaimed halon 1301 / 1211 can only be used in existing systems until 31st December 2002. After this date no refilling can take place." |
http://www.fireprotectiononline.co.uk/news/3/Whatever-Happened-To-Halon-Fire-Extinguishers.html
Quote : | "If you still have any Halon fire extinguishers, they must be properly decommissioned and disposed of immediately - the official deadline was December 2003. Halon portable fire extinguishers are very distinctive, as their canister is painted in a rich British racing green" |
Odd, my bottle is green... anywho.
Funny, because the last service ticket on it was stamped April 2005. The label on the bottle says it was hydrotested for 400psi June 2000. I just don't understand why they would service this bottle if it could have only been used until the end of 2003...
I figured it'd be nice to keep around in the garage when working on the car, etc... Anyways, what would you do?11/4/2008 12:55:55 PM |

You are supposed to use halon extinguishers to stop a diesel engine that wont otherwise shut off. 11/4/2008 1:06:38 PM |

Oh snap! So if I had one of these in my boat would I be able to drop it off at a fire station no questions asked like an unwanted baby?11/4/2008 1:51:13 PM |

Yeah. I called a fire station and they said I could keep it. The only issue is they don't use 1211 for Halon refills, it's 13 something. And it's really expensive. SO yay , I gotz free halon!
It is not illegal to have or use. Just illegal to refill 1211.

The issue is that halon used to be used in large systems, like restaurants, generators rooms, ships, etc.
One little extinguisher isn't that big of a deal. 11/4/2008 5:24:35 PM |
