i just say more than you're willing to pay and hang up or walk off, if they are serious about buying it, they will try again, but they never do

Usually means you're asking too much. Annoys me too, though. I prefer to show up with a trailer or driver, wave a wad of cash around, negotiate some, thank them for their time and start to leave. 75% of the time, it works every time. Doesn't work if you've driven long distances though, so if it's in, say, SC, I lie and say I'm from Charlotte or brush it off as if I drive long distances for work all the time.

As a seller, my response to "bottom dollar?" is "stop by tonight and let's talk". I never drop the price over phone or email.

^^^^ yeah, i agree. retarded.

^^^ making me an offer without seeing it doesn't bother me. i do that all the time...i can always back out or work the price down some more if i find anything unaccounted for wrong with it when i see it.

asking me to state my lowest cash price is retarded, though. for one thing, it's not like i'm going to sell it on your credit...all i'm going to take is cash or certified check, anyway...and i'm not going to give you any meaningful break on the price by your asking that. i'll knock a hundred bucks off or something. now, if you make an offer, i have to either accept it, deny it, or make a counteroffer.

^ it doesn't mean you're asking too much. You could be selling a car for half of what it's worth, and i'll still do my best every time to work you down as much as i can (understanding that i might not get far, if anywhere).

furthermore, i will walk away from a purchase no matter how far i've driven to make it. when i bought my jet ski, i'd driven 4-5 hours to pick it up. It didn't run like it should on the test ride, and he wasn't willing to come down enough on the price to satisfy me, so I drove off...saw him waving his arms in the rearview mirror, turned around and bought the ski for the offer i'd just made him.

I had a guy drive 4 hours to offer me $1k less than my asking price. I was like "I could have just told you no over the phone." Then he had to drive 4 hours home.

in a tonnnn of cases its worked for me though

a few it hasnt.

all depends on the demand for the car and how many calls/visits the guy has gotten.

I'd tell them, "Well I'm selling a car in exchange for money, you're a college student, figure out how this is gonna end."

I'm a college student with no money, so I can't afford your car and I'm just wasting your time.

So uh..... You want to sell your car for less than half of what it's worth?

half is ridiculous

but say it goes for $10k as your asking price

chances are id offer like $7500 as a start.

id prolly stop at $8500-$9000 and let you think about it if you didnt accept....the longer time goes and the car hasnt been sold the more appealing my bid looks.

^ I wouldn't even respond if you offered me $7500.
If I did it would be something like "LOL, GTFO you cheap bastard."

^^^ yeah, same here, unless $10k was already a too good to be true price (in which case i'd probably offer 9k, or maybe 9500 if i thought he was pretty much rightfully firm on the price and there was almost no chance i'd get it for any substantial furthur discount)
