Old Even at that price, they're turning > $0.05/gal profit. I kind of wish stations weren't using falling prices as a chance to turn a profit for once, but...I can't begrudge them a few cents, when they sometimes even lose money on every gallon sold.[Edited on November 8, 2008 at 12:53 AM. I think it is going to keep dropping, especially after Obama rams through his agenda for cars that run on pretty much anything but gas. It is going to take some time to find the right product but when they do its all over. I mean I am sure back when people were taking trains powered by steam engines they could not have pictured a world where pretty much every adult has their own car powered by a gas engine. As soon as they find something that can be mass produced and have a LOWER cost of ownership then it will sell like crazy. I mean look at how many Priuses you see on the road now and those things cost so damn much you do not even see any savings over buying gas.

I wish the US had a bullet train infrastructure, in addition to highways.

Me too.I think Raleigh needs a train at least between RTP, the airport, fairgrounds/carter-finley/RBC center, up the track through campus and to downtown near the convention center.
11/8/2008 1:05:23 AM
^are you willing to pay for it through increased taxes?
11/8/2008 1:07:42 AM
^ yes
11/8/2008 1:08:21 AM
^6 I bought my car (Chevrolet Cobalt) new for $12k and it gets 30 city, 40 highway mpg driving conservatively. The prius gets about 50 mpg and costs about $25k.At $3/gallon:My car - $0.075/mile (highway), $0.10/mile (city)Prius - $0.06/mileThus saving 1.5 cents per mile, you'd have to drive it 865,000 highway miles to reach the break-even point, or 325,000 city miles. Not to mention the Cobalt doesn't look nearly as gay and has far more power.Fuck the prius.]

11/8/2008 1:30:12 AM
I drove a Chevy Cobalt as a rental car once and I actually really liked it.Then again I also really loved my Ford Escort when I had it.
11/8/2008 1:38:37 AM
damn. $1.99 is sweeeeeeet.
11/8/2008 2:02:30 AM
god I can only wish my town was that cheap - when gas started dropping, we were the cheapest in NC, now we're pretty much the highest - fucking assholes - 2.38 was the cheapest I found today in town (Roxboro)[Edited on November 8, 2008 at 2:14 AM. Reason : ]
11/8/2008 2:13:03 AM
anyone know how much gas is at costco?
11/8/2008 2:39:04 AM
I saw the $1.99 sign on my way downtown tonight and couldn't believe it. It's been a long time since I've seen that. It's still like $2.36 on Avent Ferry in front of Food Lion.

All the Prius drivers are just making a statement.
11/8/2008 9:16:31 AM
Cheaper gas gives you worse gas mileage. *Think about it, you spend less money meaning more money in your pocket as you drive away. Your car is heavier than it would have been if the gas were more expensive, so you get worse gas mileage.* Does not apply if fuel purchased with credit card.
11/8/2008 9:19:41 AM
My wrangler was so light the motherfucker drove differently on a full tank than it did on empty.
11/8/2008 9:21:52 AM
^lol, I felt the same thing when I had a wrangler.no gas = lightweight sporty type vehcilefull of gas = felt like a fucking tank [Edited on November 8, 2008 at 10:08 AM. Reason : oh, and I just filled up at the BP. still 1.99]

I drive a Prius and am enjoying the shit out of cheap gas. I'm still saving a shit ton of money with cheap gas compared to the F-150 I traded in for it. While I could have gotten something cheaper, I bought it because I'm a nerd and like the technology that it contains. As far as the environment goes, I just throw some trash out of my window every once in a while to offset any help it may give
11/8/2008 10:52:49 AM
you could have bought a scooter and been even happier
11/8/2008 10:54:02 AM
i cant believe we are happy about $2 gas. Ill be happy when its down around 1.15 again
11/8/2008 10:56:04 AM
I don't know how everyone else is faring but I love this recession, only the benefits like tumbling gas prices have affected me so far
11/8/2008 10:58:39 AM
dont worry, your prius polluted enough when it was produced (batteries flown around the world, as well as other parts). And it will pollute when it dies (more like, becomes cost prohibitive to fix) earlier than most other cars, causing you to buy another.

The thing that scares me about the new technology cars is the long term maintenance costs. You do not really know what you are getting in to. I heard a hybrid replacement battery costs 10k or something. We have come to expect our cars to have a functional life of about 20 years or 200,000 miles. The first batch of hybrids is not going to make it that far. It is just the painful part of new technology I guess. There is also a long way to go toward getting the internal combustion engine to be as efficient as possible. The automakers have made a lot of progress toward that already.
11/8/2008 11:50:25 AM
1.96 off of 70 in garner. too bad i filled up thursday when it was 2.33. oh well, that's only ~$7 bucks I would've saved.

11/8/2008 4:45:59 PM
