i was at wake med this afternoon and i noticed this blind womanwith her dog in the floral lanscaping in front of the patient registration center. it became immediately obvious to me that the dog wasnt leading her because it was runnin around eating shit off the grass
it was a lab (never seen a lab as a service dog) and the lady was obviously strugglin her ass off tryna get the dog focused again, it was kinda sad because she was obviously completely blind. at one poitn for some reason she took the handle thing off the dog and started using the normal leash instead. this went on for about 5 minutes..she wasnt in any danger of goin out into the road the dog wouldnt leave the flowers. this couple came by and in another 5 minutes eventually led her back into the patient center (btw the dog resumed doing its job once they got it away from the flowers). they were obviously afraid to leave the lady, and also the dog was exteemely unfocused and tried to follow them around as well as a few passing children before beign directed into the hospital
basically is there some kind of protocol onlookers should follow if they see something like this? i felt bad just sitting there but the last thingh i wanted to do was further screw the dog up 11/8/2008 7:50:32 PM |

Maybe rape her with no condom and bust on her face then cut both achilles so she can't run for help and all ten fingers so she cant dial the cops 11/8/2008 8:45:04 PM |

This is not Chit Chat.
I would ask her if she needed some assistance. Normally, you aren't supposed to interfere with service animals, but if its pretty obvious that something is wrong. . .help! 11/8/2008 8:48:02 PM |

Really?

Anyway, I would have just walked up and asked her if she needed help. Seems like the sensible thing to do.11/8/2008 9:43:29 PM |

sounds like that dog needs a refresher course
I wonder if their skills are guaranteed for life like when you get your dog professionally house-trained and obedience-trained 11/8/2008 10:04:27 PM |

Yea.. aren't labs one of the more common breeds for this type of work? (smart, obedient, willing to serve). 11/9/2008 1:00:19 AM |

it was interesting. i had a convo with a blind dude and he said his dog (a lab) was great with ppl, but didnt get along with other dogs. go figure. 11/9/2008 10:19:48 AM |

Yea my mom raises the puppies and every one of them have been black labs, and 95% of the program uses labs.
but really if you see someone in distress ask if they need help. I would assume though that the dog was still under control, its incredibly had to get them to break focus when they are working, random smells wont do it 11/9/2008 12:33:13 PM |
