M1'S ARE THE HEAT SON, BUT THEY'RE EXPENSIVE AND HEAVY.

THEY'RE NOT THE MOST PRACTICAL WEAPON, BUT THEY ARE GOOD GUNS. I'M A FAN OF THE "SCOUT" STYLE M1'S.

IT'S A SPRINGFIELD M1A SCOUT SQUAD RIFLE SON.

PERSONALLY, I WOULDN'T GO FOR THE ORIGINAL M1 RIGHT NOW UNLESS IT WAS JUST A COLLECTOR'S ITEM BECAUSE IT WILL STILL BE ABLE TO BE PURCHASED AFTER THE NEXT AWB. THAT M1A SCOUT SQUAD RIFLE THERE IS A DAMN GOOD WEAPON AND PRODUCTION WILL BE BANNED SOON IMO. PLUS, THE ORIGINAL DIDN'T HAVE A DETACHABLE MAGAZINE WHICH MAKES IT LESS THAN IDEAL FOR SELF DEFENSE. IT'S ALSO OVERLY POWERFUL FOR CLOSE UP ENCOUNTERS IMO AND IT CARRIES A HIGH OVERPENETRATION RISK UNLESS YOU USE REALLY GOOD (EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, LIKE $2-$3 A ROUND) AMMUNITION.

THAT RIFLE IS A DAMN GOOD SELF DEFENSE WEAPON IN AN OUTDOOR MEDIUM TO RELATIVELY LONG RANGE SITUATION. IT'S GOT A LOT MORE KNOCK DOWN POWER THAN AN AR-15 AND IT HAS A LOT MORE RANGE THAN A 12 GAUGE. I'D LOVE TO HAVE ONE IN A SHTF SITUATION WHERE I HAD TO FEND FOR MYSELF IN THE WILDERNESS AGAINST BOTH TWO AND FOUR LEGGED PREDATORS AS WELL AS HAVING TO HUNT FOR FOOD.

CLOSE UP AND ESPECIALLY INDOORS IT'S NOT AS GOOD BECAUSE OF ITS WEIGHT AND LARGE SIZE. IT CAN BE HARD TO MANEUVER IT AROUND IN TIGHT SPACES BECAUSE IT'S SO HEAVY AND LONG, KIND OF LIKE MY DICK.

BUT IF YOU HIT SOMEBODY WITH A QUALITY ROUND FROM THAT RIFLE, THEY ARE DONE.

the gun is getting willed to me by my grandfather, and i have a glock and a shotgun for home defense.

a guy in The Lounge said something about using only military spec ammo though, since the hotter rounds could bend the operating rod.

truth?

IF IT'S ORIGINAL I WOULDN'T SUGGEST STRESSING IT SON. LOOK AT THE MUZZLE VELOCITY AND MUZZLE ENERGY OF THE LOADS YOU'RE USING. THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE MIL-SPEC TO BE RELATIVELY WEAK NECESSARILY.

NEWER AMMO DOES TEND TO BE HOTTER IN MOST CALIBERS DUE TO STRONGER FIREARMS.

to the OP, and no i havent shot one (but ive handled an M1A... variant of the same action)

yes, shoot mil-spec ammo, although cheaper .30-06 probably wouldnt hurt it in small quantities (low power).

M1 Garands are great guns and should be taken care of, you should check it's production date and history.

my uncle has one circa WWII

heavy as lead

fun as shit to shoot

the "ping!" after the eighth round is awesome

no good for hunting

no good for stopping an intruder in your home (compared to a shotgun)

would be fun to take to the range occasionally

for starters the picture posted above in an M1-A. the M1-A has a detachable magazine and is the semi auto version of an M14. The M1 Garand was one of the main rifles used in WWII. there are variations of the M1 Garand. Mainly the M1C and M1D. both of which are not clip slotted for detached magazines. please note what you are getting is not like the picture. the name "scout" is not a military term and is some kind of a marketing term for that M1A.

Garand's are a pain to load ammo into the clips that hold the ammo. then you can get what is often times called M1 thumb after you close the bolt with no clip. you have to release the bolt while your thumb is in the clip slot. often times smashing your thumb as the blot slams forward. after the last shot the "ping" noise is from the ejection of the "clip" holding the ammo. the "c" variation came with a scope and was often considered a "sniper" rifle. the "d" variation had the addition of a flash suppressor. the "c" was not introduced until late into the war. i am not sure what year but i would guess it was late 44 or maybe even early 45. i am not sure when the "d" was introduced. garands also have a very distinct recoil feel as the op rods are very long and the springs cause a very hard slam as the bolt closes. i used to shoot alot of matches with them in the "service rifle" class. i still own a few but dont shoot them much any more. i switched over to ar's because of the reduction of recoil and how cheap ammo is.

i have not heard of op rods bending. in match shooting most guys shot handloads. we would shoot true 1000 yards at camp perry often. i have never bent an op rod from ammo. newer ammo tends to be "hotter" not because of "stronger" firearms. i believe what he is trying to say is new weapons are capable of handling higher chamber pressures due to steel alloys and general engineering. in turn manufactures are developing ammo that shoots flatter further based on what the public wants for accuracy and hunting. the garand has a rotating bolt that is not capable of handling chamber pressures that bolt actions rifles will. head spacing may also be a consideration if the rifle is not in its original form and shooting heavier loads.

side note. the rarest of all garands is the "gas trap" garand. pretty cool they are. i was at an auction at least 15 years ago and saw one go for over 50K.

no more energy to write more. if you have an specific questions i would be happy to answer to the best of my ability. just ask them.

Off topic but I'm looking at either a Browning Mark II Lightweight Stalker or a Weatherby Vanguard SUB-MOA both probably in a .270 Winchester.

I'm really leaning toward the Stalker because it is lighter and autoloading is the heat.

^^I agree the M1's are a PAIN to load ammo into. And the recoil feels like a 12 gauge, unlike an AR15 that feels like a 22.

I've been very happy with the AR15 and 2 oversized clips banded together. Deer have no chance

classic rifle. sturdy, heavy, fun to shoot. Watch out for 'Garand thumb' and good luck finding one, they're getting more scarce and pricier than before. There used to be a CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) thing you could do where you learn to shoot it and enter in one competition and Springfield Armory or the gov't would sell you one for like $400, but that might not be happening anymore.

Jesus Christ. If you can't deal with loading an en bloc clip and are worried about the bolt fucking up your manicure then maybe you should give up shooting and try badminton.

M1s are fucking great. A gun made back when a man was man and not some vag bitching about how awesome the kick is on a goddamn .223.
