Next year I'll be starting my clinical rotations and I'd like something handy where I can quickly pull up drug information/interactions/dosages. I don't really want a new phone with these capabilities because I'd like to keep the two separate. Does anyone still use these or might anyone have some recommendations for me?

standalone PDAs are almost like pagers at this point.

that said, my wife had some variety of palm in med school, and when she started residency she started using her ipod touch once she found out that epocrates and the other important apps were available for the ipod touch/iphone.

then she got tired of carrying both her phone and ipod touch around given all the crap you have to carry around in your white coat and the limited number of pockets, so when she was up for a renewal we got her an iphone, and she couldn't be happier. she says the interface for epocrates and (i can't remember the name of the other apps that she uses on a daily basis) are way better on the iphone than the palm based app she used before.

ultimately, talk to some of the interns and residents you'll be working with. their advice is gonna be worth way more than anyone here since i don't think any of us are doctors.

PDA's are required for med school students at UNC.

I am surprised you dont already have one.

In any event there is an incredibly useful application for the iphone that helps diagnose patients as well as cross reference potential meds you may need to prescribe.

At some med schools they are supplied by the school. Check that out. I know there are several drug databases and other utilities aimed at students and doctors.

But if not? Ipod touch.
