I want to disgust myself into leading a *meat-free life-style. Anyone know of any gross, realistic, shocking, videos, stories and books of what goes on in the meat industry.

I've eaten meat my whole life. I never realized how difficult it would be to change such a big portion of my diet. Sometimes I find it hard to remember that the delicious looking steak is the product of cruelty, neglect and drugs.

I wanted to see something that will shock my system, so that I'll never go back to leading a meat-eating lifestyle.

* this does not include penis

Don't listen to them, feel free to do whatever you like to the meat industry. It's not like they deserve anyone's pity.

^3 I made the thread because I thought that there were a few vegetarians on this site. I had hoped they would offer a little insight on how and why they decided to lead this lifestyle.

Buy your beef and chicken from me. There is no cruelty, neglect, or drugs on our farm. I don't have pork, but I can point you in the right direction.

If you'd visit some local beef farms, you wouldn't think this way. My family has operated a beef farm for several generations, and there's no way you could describe how our livestock is treated as cruel and neglectful. They're well fed, vaccinated against diseases, and have plenty of clean water to drink from. The drugs we give them to prevent against disease are no more cruel than the vaccinations you were given as a kid. We treat our livestock as well as we treat our own pets.

slaughter houses might not look as humane as the farm the cows came from, but they're designed to efficiently feed the animals and then kill them as quickly and painlessly as possible before preparing them for consumption.

You need to elaborate on "well fed".

^^good post. We direct market beef and chicken, and I can say for sure that the slaughter house we use treats the animals very humanely. We process chicken on the farm, and of course we do it the right way.

We free range feed them during the months of the year when the pastures will allow it. The pastures are clipped in the spring to kill off ragweed and buttercups (yellow plants sour a cows milk and can cause calves to be undernourished.) We stockpile hay off of the pastures that cattle aren't kept on to feed them during the winter. We don't let them graze down the pastures too low in the winter before feeding them the stored hay.

The cows are given mineral tubs and salt blocks to replace salt and minerals that they otherwise don't get enough of in their diet.

When we are trying to fatten up the calves we are selling off for slaughter, we start supplying them with corn and oat based feed in addition to the grass around them to fatten them up prior to slaughter.

In the event that a beef cow has twins, the cow's natural instinct is to abandon the first calf and keep the second one because it thinks it only produces enough milk to support one healthy calf. When this happens, we'll milk the cow and supplement the cow's milk with formula so that we can bottle feed both calves. Usually after a week or so of doing this, both calves will be strong and quick enough that they can nurse off of the mother cow without her kicking them away.

[Edited on November 14, 2008 at 5:36 PM. Reason : by "grass" I mean Johnson grass, Lespedeza, and clover primarily.]

look, dnl, abuse does happen. There is no denying that. But for the most part the industry is not what PETA/veg people would want you to think.
