Wal-Mart is having a decent online deal on a PS3 package right now.

The Samsung BD-P1500 is also like $204 currently at Amazon, which I think is the same price it's supposed to be Black Friday at one of the major retailers.

ps3, no doubt. My brother did this recently after wanting to get a $Texas player and he is so happy he chose the ps3 route.

echo the PS3. One of the best players out there, and it plays games, internet, folds, etc. and it's inexpensive compared to higher end players.

The only problem I have with the PS3 as a dedicated Movie player (I have one, I have 30+ Blu ray movies and 0 games) is the damn thing doesn't have an IR port. Sony wants you to have to buy this hideously enormous bluetooth remote (or use a controller, which isn't any better) in order to control your movies. It really sucks if you've already got a top-end all in one programmable remote. The only solution I found was to buy an ir to bluetooth converter box, so at least now I can use my harmony on my PS3. But keep in mind, if you're anal like me and you want to be able to have one remote that controls everything, that's gonna add ~$50 or more to the overall price if you go the PS3 route.

i would have bought a ps3, especially with the backwards compatability. the only reason i didnt is that my sharp tv came with a free sharp blu-ray player back in february.

^^ this is only $20 and gives you IR for PS3: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8746137&st=Nyko&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=1202650462606

Yeah, but with that you still need to use a controller or bluetooth remote to power the PS3 on and off and you don't get any of the advanced features of the bluetooth remote (or really anything other than the basic controls).

That's hardly a solution to the problem if you remotely care about this sort of stuff.

^ Doesn't the PS3 auto power on when you put the disk in?

I dunno. Maybe. But it's just still not in the same ballpark.

Trust me, there's a reason that products like the IR2BT exist. And there's a reason that they go for $150+ on ebay (when you can find them)

i went with the BDP1500 and love it. It's great cuz I already have a 360 and although I'd love a PS3, I would sink $$$ into it after buying the adapter for my Harmony remote, extra controllers and games. Instead I only payed like $230 or something and got a player that I've loved so far

That's probably what I should have done. I bought the PS3 thinking that one day there might be some PS3 exclusive games that were worth a damn, but it doesn't look like that's ever gonna be the case.

I just looked at the last 50 posts that I've made in Tech Talk and aside from (arguably) that post up there, a couple of posts about how I couldn't get something that should be obvious to work in Vista, and one (joking) post about a cellphone that has buttons they are all helpful and on topic.

I would hardly say that constitutes "pretty much all" of my posts being whining.

My point was that for the first year or so the PS3 was out the definitive best answer to the OP's question was "Get a PS3" Not only was it one of the best Blu-Ray players, but because Sony wouldn't allow anyone to sell standalone players for cheaper, it was also the cheapest. It was a no brainer. But now it's not so cut and dry. The laser technology has now gotten cheaper to produce, there are sub $200 players out there, and some of the better standalone players are coming down in price to where if you're not interested in the gaming aspect of the PS3, it just doesn't make as much sense to buy one. If saying that is gonna hurt some PS3 fanboys' feelings, that's really not my problem.
