Anyone know of any good ones? My neighbor who recently moved from NY is looking for a referral. Obviously I could just Google it, but if any of you older folks have any experience with local attorneys with things of this nature, I'd appreciate the input. Thanks Tdub.

Most attorneys are gonna charge you 3500 retainer just to start, and then a hourly rate after.
Custody is messy, time intensive and takes forever.Usually. 11/17/2008 8:46:22 PM |

Try the NC Bar's Lawyer Referral Service...just google it.
I actually work at a firm that only does family law, but we're not taking new clients right now. Some places will actually do a flat fee for a certain time period, such as Rosen Law Firm (but they were recently censured by the bar).
Good luck. $200+/hr really does add up. 11/17/2008 9:22:43 PM |

I will put it to you this way.
A one week trial will cost you (just you, not including the ex) enough in legal fees to pay for 1/2 of your kids first year at a public university, or a two year degree including books at wake tech.] 11/17/2008 9:44:53 PM |

its time to have your neighbor grow balls and sit down with his/her ex and reason things out - $200/hr is on the low end. And they're lawyers - they will take everything you have, and cut you off the second you say your running short of cash - I've seen it happen twice 11/17/2008 10:06:53 PM |

I think the wording of this is a little misleading.
The hourly rate is taken out of the $3,500 retainer. So when the $3,500 is gone, the lawyer will continuing billing at the hourly rate, or ask for more money to be put into the client trust account where the fees can be taken out of. It's not like you pay the lawyer $3,500 just to represent you and then start paying them for their work.11/18/2008 9:57:56 AM |

Mac Boxley. I haven't had experience with him as an attorney, but have known him personally for a number of years. He's the exact opposite of slimy lawyer.

that's because people get married before they even know each other these days. they believe in this false notion that love at first sight actually exists. 11/18/2008 2:40:50 PM |

My marriage was for different reasons, and because I believed it was "the right thing to do". I learned from that experience, and vowed not to rush into a second marriage until I was 100% sure it was going to last forever. My most recent relationship proves that. 11/18/2008 3:07:02 PM |

Because it's not really love. I don't know if you are married or have been married or whatever. What I do know is that what I have with my wife after 10 years of marriage is about 100% different than what we had when we got married, and that was even after 5 years of dating. I am not saying love at first site it is difficult, I am saying it is absolutely impossible. 11/18/2008 5:20:05 PM |

i feel the same today as i did the day i met my future wife- 3 years later and after 2 years of living together.
like i said, just because you havent experienced something doesnt mean it doesnt exist.
nobody on here has experienced death, do you question its existence? 11/18/2008 7:37:37 PM |
