Because we pay for trash pickup and recycling.Half the time, our recycling is left behind.I found out why, today. It's because I put white paper and newspaper in our bin. They claim they'll get fined if they bring these materials to the recycling center (which, by the way, are City of Raleigh, and what sounded like Feltonville? They use municipal sites, and pay a fee to dump there). But, glossy magazines are okay, as long as they're staple-bound.But the City of Raleigh accepts these materials both at the centers, and for the curbside pick-up program.

they don't want to actually have to accept the cost of providing the services you paid forcall the newspaper

Perfect binding isn't recyclable? Or do they just not take it?
11/19/2008 2:07:13 PM
why not just haul your own shit off?but, yeah, they should do what you pay them to do.
11/19/2008 2:08:18 PM
^,^^^I just cancelled, instead.^"Perfect binding"? Like, glue, and most magazines?I would assume they don't take it. His words were "And magazines, as long as they're staple-bound"^Cause when we started service, I didn't have a car, and my bf would rather pay someone to do that.I have a car now, and I do intend to start hauling our recycling. Trash, not so much [Edited on November 19, 2008 at 2:09 PM. Reason : lkjdf]

^good call on canceling.
11/19/2008 2:09:19 PM
Yeah, that. I have never heard of a place taking staple-bound mags but not those. It does sound like they are just making shit up.
11/19/2008 2:09:24 PM
I think they are, too...but what are you gonna do? Drive 30 minutes to show up in person to get a straight answer?Fuck them. They just cost themselves some revenue. I might even become MORE of a recycling nazi, just so we can do away with trash pickup completely.

you should compost your food scrapsand sort your recyclingresell all of the scrap metal but seriously, you should call the newspaper and get them to go all investigative reporter on the bullshit lies that are municipal recycling programs
11/19/2008 2:12:41 PM
It's not a municipal program. It's a private company, because we live in an unincorporated part of Wake Co. It's nice.I do need to get back to composting. My undersink bin got icky, and I gave up for a while No need to sort recyclables. The facility down on Old Stage is one where you don't have to sort. You get to dump it all in at once My biggest concerns for eliminating trash pickup (via reducing our trash drastically) is going to be pet waste. From what I read, it's not safe to compost that with an eye towards gardening. Even if you use a compostable litter and scoop out solids and clumps, it's not ever safe to use for gardening. For food, at least.

I just take small stuff to campus and recycle it. Mainly just water bottles, printer/notebook paper. I used to take cans, but I save them for a long time and turn them in for money. Not so much for the money, but because if you take them to the metal recyclers, they'll be properly dealt with.Blugh! Yeah, don't compost pet waste! There's no telling what your pet may pick up from a virus to worms. And the ammonia in the cat pee is more likely to kill your garden. [Edited on November 19, 2008 at 2:25 PM. Reason : ]

just bury pet waste in a hole in the backyard... don't use the hole for garden compost

This is why the recycling fairy (my mother-in-law) visits my house with a giant load of bottles and cardboard every week.

Also, invest in a doggie dooley. http://www.doggiedooley.com/
11/19/2008 2:30:40 PM
isn't it a bit antithetical to buy a plastic contraption to help you compost?
11/19/2008 2:58:53 PM
I think the kinds of people who buy a doogie dooley aren't the type who care about composting, OR buying plastic shit to do it with.

At least you had a recycling bin. We have lived here for over a year and been trying to get them to get us a damned bin.
