Is fiber a shared pipe, like cable? Or is it dedicated, like DSL? 11/20/2008 9:05:21 PM |

Would you please explain what sucks about U-Verse? I asked you in the other thread and you didn't answer. People have asked you multiple times in here now and you don't answer. I don't need fiber to my house. To the node with VDSL to the house for the same speeds, channels, and QoS as TWC for a lot cheaper sounds great to me. If there really is something shitty about the service, why don't you let us know.
Quote : | "great! still no competition to force TWC to upgrade their service" |
Quite the contrary, TWC is finally getting their shit together and rolling out like 20 HD channels to the area. They fear U-Verse and are being forced to compete. I suspect after many people jump ship, they'll fix all their shittacular boxes and issues and roll Docsis 3.0 out much sooner. Competition will be alive and well.
^ Verizon does fiber all the way to your house. AT&T didn't want to eat the huge cost of that right now, so they have a hybrid setup where they take fiber to near your neighborhood and then DSL throughout the rest of your hood. It should hold them over for another 5-10 years until higher cable speeds and fiber to the house forces them to upgrade again. Personally, I think it was a great business decision because something like WiMax might make all the capital outlay for wiring obsolete.

I should adjust what I said earlier. It's more similar to cable modems except the shared link between you and the central office (fiber) supports more bandwidth then the sum of the nodes. Once you get into the CO though, you will hit aback plane bottle neck. Same thing that would happen with DSL.

If you are referring to what I said about "FIOS" as Verizon brands their "GPON" network no I didnt just make it up.
Divide 2,488 Mbits/sec by 32/64 nodes.
First tell me if you think they will offer you those speeds 77Mbits/sec and 38.875Mbit/sec respectively .
Then explain to me how their CO is going to have a 2,488 Mbits/sec service to the internet for every 32/64 users.
Then explain what the 4 port LT cards are going to do with 2,488 Mbits/sec *4 = 9952 Mbits/sec data.
Then explain how the 16 LT cards ( I believe that's how many can fit in a shelf) in one shelf is going to support 9952 Mbits/sec * 16 = 159232Mbits/sec across its back plane.
All I was out to say is that the link between your house and the central office will be able to physically support the transmission of all its users. ONT's start up and "range" in a very similar way to cable modems. You are granted time slots that you will adjust based on the content you need. There is a ton of QoS crap that I know nothing about. Once it enters the LT though, and the backplane, and the NT, and the connection to the interwebs, it could be a long line. I personally hope it inspires competition, an increase in competitor protocol speeds (docsys 3.0) and ultimately lowers prices for users while granting them higher speeds. I don't ever have a problem with my cable modem and my only DSL experience was sour.12/7/2008 8:53:50 AM |

^ So they can get you to enter a zipcode and, if it's available in your area, they can give you pricing that is custom-tailored to your area.
This way they can charge higher prices in areas with less competition and lower prices in area with more competition. 12/7/2008 1:52:20 PM |

U-verse isn't going to be a major bandwidth increase over current DSL because U-verse isn't going to upgrade your neighborhood infrastructure to deliver increased bandwidth to your home. You'll still be using a copper connection to the neighborhood switch, and that copper connection will still have quite a low bandwidth cap when compared to fiber to the home, or DOCSIS3.0.
The point of U-verse more or less currently is that its ATT's triple play implementation: bringing voice, data and video over one line to your house. Its TV implementation is slightly better then FiOS, actually, in that its true IPTV.
It doesn't 'suck' and it actually would force competition on TWC because U-Verse roll outs mirror the bandwidth of current TWC caps in the Triangle area, but with TV options that could, in theory, be completely ala carte.
The problem with U-Verse is that its theoretical bandwidth cap is lower then both Cable and FiOS. 12/7/2008 5:15:39 PM |

Also - Just a question for you all before I call the phone company.
Here is my situation - I got Vonage a few years ago and that's working fine. Last December when we installed some new electrical the green phone box was removed to make room for some other stuff and now I can not find it. I am now selling my house and I need to have it put back up I would assume. Will they come out and do that for free? All the wiring is still there I guess I just need the junction box. 12/10/2008 11:45:23 PM |
