The technician posted an article (http://technicianonline.com/viewpoint/google_provides_best_upgrade_for_e-mail_system) about email on campus and mentioned the website for feedback being buried in the OIT site.

If you're interested in participating in the discussion on what email / calendaring system is chosen for students, you can do so at: http://oit.ncsu.edu/forum/student-email-task-force. This is an excellent way for the email task force to get the feedback of the students on what they're most interested in.

I've been seeing a lot of universities moving to google to manage their email.

Not that I don't like the idea, but aren't there security and privacy concerns with turning over email to a third party? There are all sorts of rules and laws concerning student information, official business and record keeping, grants and contracts information, etc...

^ That's why I wonder how universities get around all the privacy and data security laws that apply to them.

IIRC, UNCG is in the process of outsourcing all student e-mail to Google. They're also looking into moving faculty in that direction to reduce costs.

Having google host email != consumer gmail service.

The same way google offers search appliances to other corporations. They aren't publicly indexing those appliances, they are separate entities using the same platform.

The same principle is true for google mail. All the technology, none of the "free email" privacy concerns.

I make sure to wrap my e-mail in tinfoil. This way they can't read it.
