This stuff is a joke anyways. I mean it has stuff like Kid Rock nominated for best Rock album when the few songs I have been subjected to off of that album are probably some of the worst rock songs I heard all year. I would probably listen to Nickelback or Alter Bridge or any of those boring bands before I had to listen to Kid Rock's latest album.

the carter III has some good singles, but i don't feel it overall as a complete album experience. then again, i don't get that with any rap albums.

in rainbows blows everything else away.

I had no clue nominations even came out or that it was this time of year which should go to show you how much they have fallen off. Radiohead got about five nominations including Album of the Year and looking at the other albums and choices they are trying to be more relevant by going mainstream.

Coldplay just got nominated because anything a band releases after an album like X&Y will seem like a work of art.

I'm pretty sick of it from being around people who listen to it a lot. I can't say whether its good or bad since I don't get super excited about that kind of music anyways, but It really did nothing for me. My opinions on it range from neutral (dont mind it as background music) to annoying depending on the context.

Either way I would listen to it 1000 times before I had to listen to the Kid Rock stuff again.

production, maybe

beats were nice

lyrics.... NO. there's really no content aside from 2 or 3 songs

guests weren't too numerous, and they don't make an album.

is it a good album, probably. great... FUCK NO. Nas had a better album, that's for damn sure. TI's is better. The new Common shits on it.

the real answer to the question is that the grammys are a complete farce and don't matter whatsoever

this is pretty spot-on regarding how they nominate:

how? he's good at putting words together that rhyme. that's it. there is no lyrical integrity to what he does whatsoever. every time i hear someone say he is the greatest rapper alive it makes me want to shit.

No offense thegoodlife3 because I generally enjoy your posting, but I don't really understand why people say his beats are creative. I just dont see it at all.

I mean, take two of his hit singles off this album Lollipop and Ms Officer and you're looking at 2 songs with maybe about 5 seconds worth of actual music that is looped at the same exact tempo in 4/4 with a slightly varying drum beat behind it for 4 minutes. Got Money is basically a loop of <10 seconds of music too and a milli is terribly annoying along with, once again being a loop with slightly varying drums on top.

Nothing against 4/4 or keeping it simple because I use it all the time (majority of the time really), but if you're going to straight out no shame loop something for 4 minutes straight at least make it interesting or somewhat creative.

I guess I just don't "get it" I dono. And like I said, I can't say whether it is good or bad for what it is because of my general disinterest in the genre. It serves its purpose, no doubt about that because of its popularity, and it has also sold tons of records, but if you're talking about being a best musical album? shouldn't anywhere in sight imo. Its regurgitated background, club/party fluff with lyrics that lack any real substance or creativity. Does that mean it shouldnt exist? No way, we need fluff. I just dont see it as an accomplished piece of music is all.

And once again, having said that, I would still rather listen to it than most stuff on that grammy list

Forgive me.

But the integrity of mainstream hip hop died around 2001.

I mean, bottom of the fucking Atlantic dead.

any discussion beyond "it's fun to dance to" is laughable.

hell, probably even 1998 or so.

i would say the carter 3 is definitely one of the top albums of the year.. not THE best of album of the year, but out of that list, sure. it's one of those albums that i overplayed in a month, but it definitely got a shitload more listens from me than the "rock" albums that were supposed to be so good (TV on the Radio, Radiohead, whoever the fuck else)

Atmosphere's album absolutely destroys the carter 3 when comparing hiphop albums, but once again thats coming from not a huge hip hop fan so I may look at stuff differently. If I were to try and nominate artists for album of the year objectively (from a few musical styles even if they arent all on my own best of list) but on a scale that would still be appropriate for the grammys I would have probably gone with:

Radiohead - In Rainbows (not 2008 but was selected based on their criteria)
The Mars Volta- Bedlam in Goliath
Beck - Modern Guilt
Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
Fleet Foxes - s/t

Radiohead, duh. Easily the best music out of their current selection so I kept that.

The Mars Volta's album this year was probably their most accessible to those not wanting really long songs and they included a song off of it already in their awards so I'm adding this one as a "hard rock" nominee or whatever they labeled it in the other category heh. Musically I think its one of the most ambitious and unique albums of the year.

Personally I didnt love Beck but I've seen it on a lot of people's lists and he is a well known, recognizable artist with a decent album.

Atmosphere's album isnt one of the best of 2008 for me, but was the most enjoyable hip hop I heard all year and so it gets the hip hop spot in the top 5 if I was on the committee.

Fleet Foxes was solid and also unique from the other artists in this list and I think it deserves to be on there.
