Seconded. There's one book with Spark Notes. The 1st half of the semester was better than the 2nd half, because the first was a bunch of poems and short stories. One of my advisers recommended the class. I'm glad she's not my adviser anymore.

Don't remember the number, but Intro to Shakespeare with M Hunt was well worth it, both for the easy class, and the comedic value that Hunt provided every day.

If his/her sentence has a problem then it's probably improper comma use. The comma should probably be a semicolon or an en dash. Use of an en dash would preclude the requirement of a second verb and might be the best way to do it. That's all getting really picky and technical considering that we mostly use the same sort of grammar in message board posts as we do in conversation. There is plenty of debate about whether conversational English should be treated with different rules- or even without rules at all. Even in the absence of the academic debate on the matter, I would argue that his/her use of an implied phrase is no worse than your use of a dependent clause without a joined independent clause. I'm thankful enough when posts on here are coherent; I think I would lose my mind if I cared about the grammar past that.

Oops, in being a prick I forgot about the point of this thread. "Fiction Writing" was really easy when I took it; I think the course number is EN 265. I had Anderson listed that semester, but a grad student, William Conescu, taught it instead.

First of all, there is no verb in the original sentence. Loath is an adjective. Loathe is the verb that the OP was looking for.

You’re also wrong about the en dash; an em dash would be more appropriate. Feel free to break out your Chicago Manual of Style or your Oxford Guide to Style for this one. A semicolon would work if her sentence contained two independent clauses, but it doesn’t even have a verb; therefore, a semicolon would not work.

Don’t even try to bring prescriptive and descriptive grammar into the discussion; it makes you look like a schmuck.

Maybe this is expecting too much from you, but I thought it was pretty obvious that they intended to use the verb "Loathe" and not the adjective "loath" but I guess not. As I said above, language on a message board should be looked at as though it were being used in a conversation. Calling a typo or spelling error (one that spell check would miss) a missing verb would be less silly if it weren't so painfully clear what the OP was saying. Making that criticism is just as silly as those I made, except that you were taking yourself seriously.

You are right about the em dash, but I'm rather proud I remembered it wasn't a hyphen considering I haven't taken an English course in 6 years. So yes you got me, it's an en and not an em; you have also missed the point entirely in your self righteous fervor. My point was that picking on grammar in a message board is silly, especially since we almost never do it without making an error or two ourselves. I think you also missed where I said I didn't actually care about grammar. If you had, I'm sure you would have realized what I think was obvious to everyone else; I'm not being very serious here. I think you missed the line where I admitted I was being a little bit of a prick; it makes your admonishment slightly redundant.

Any class taught by Dr. Michael J. Grimwood, Department of English, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, is going to be a great class!!!! He was elected 2008 Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor. There is a reason for this...HE IS THE MAN!!! (No, he is not paying me to write this...)

Michael Grimwood, Professor of English (Ph.D., Princeton University), is co-chair of the NCSU World Literature program. He teaches courses in American literature, Southern Literature, and Twentieth-Century literature as well as courses in European literatures for the program. Author of Heart in Conflict: Faulkner's Struggles with Vocation, he has received departmental, college, and university awards for distinguished research and for outstanding teaching. He is Director of the Summer Institute in World Literature.

After hating English and Literature for most of my life, Grimwood broke me!! Ended up getting the ace in his honors class too! I was an honor to be in his class! No shit! I would not want anyone else teaching me Homer, Ovid, and Dante! If you cannot land Grimwood for a class, my runner up is Roy Stamper. He teaches in the same fashion as Grimwood. I believe he is one of Grimwood's old students. Seriously, if you need a Lit. and can sign up for a Grimwood class, do it, even if you have to wait a semester to take him.
