This man has mad questionable decisions all damn season. While he won't ever relinquish playcalling duties, he needs a damned good gadfly telling him to cool it with the cute shit. Marrone (leaving for Syracuse, this will be interesting) is waaaaaaaaay too deferential.

He made a similar move last year that cost them a game vs Tampa

They had the lead and the ball with only a few minutes left and he calls a reverse (maybe even a double reverse) that Reggie Bush fucked up and Tampa recovered and drove for the winning score

I'm all for creativity on offense (and God knows I'm starved of it watching the Panthers), but there is a time and a place to be conservative and conventional, and Payton seems unaware of that
