^^^ take the job with your dad's company. It may be tougher to interview other places, but it will look better on your resume to not have been out of work/school for an extended period.

Eh, I'd hold off for now assuming money isn't an issue.

I'm employed, but I gotta start a whole new career. I have no self-esteem so I picked the one thing that absolutely nobody wants to do...and it still didn't work out for me. LOL I'm going back to school like Rodney Dangerfield, except I'm not a quirky, old, rich guy...so not like him at all.

Working for Allscripts and they are looking for some recent grads as well as those with more experience. A bunch of jobs in Springfield Illinois looking for Comp Sci Majors, C++, Java, etc. Check out the jobs website and let me know and I can refer you to the hiring manager.

Jerb querstion:

I send resume to hiring manager on Monday. I get an email on Tuesday that the manager will be in Raleigh on Thursday and wants to meet at lunch time to discuss the position. I'm working out of town and won't be back in Raleigh until Thursday late afternoon. I explain that in an email, and offer to meet later Thursday, some other convenient time or to drive to visit their office which is in N. Virginia. Since then I've had no response, about two days.

I'm overthinking this some, and def don't want to be too pushy, but would you just wait for a response or send another email/give him a call?

A phone call may be warranted since it was supposedly tomorrow and you have no way of realistically hitting it. Hopefully the scheduling conflict doesn't compromise whether they maintain some interest in hiring you.

Well I am out of work at the end of April. I need to find a better job anyway and probably do a total career change. It just would have been nice to do that when I felt like it and not have a 4 month or less clock ticking.

I hate filling out online applications. It sucks to have to go find all of the info about past places of employment. If they call the phone numbers they won't find anyone working there anymore who knows me anyway.

Still unemployed, actively looking and passively waiting for two background investigations to begin for secret clearances for two Federal jobs. It will be a year next month. I'm fucking losing it.

I was willfully unemployed for roughly the last 7.5 months. It was nice, but new job in a new city starts October 3rd.

^^^ Federal jobs take an absurdly long time to hire but the benefits are outstanding. I hope things move along for you and you don't have to wait much longer.

I was only unemployed for 5 months in 2009 and I was losing it by the end of it.

tons of jobs out there. I've been applying.

I'm probably making the most money i've ever made (70k-ish) but was sort of forced into management. Would like to go back to about 60k and do what i want.

It sure was.

I am looking for full time jobs in project management, but I have yet to pass the PMP. It’s kind of like saying I can do surgery without a medical license. Hopefully I will pass. The PMBOK has so much information

Have you applied for unemployment? Or are you eligible if you are fired? You could make ends meet with Uber or Lyft.

^^^^ to be fair, PMP is nice and all, but it's really just an extra resume booster. Not saying you shouldn't pursue it (especially if youre trying to boost your chances since youre currently unemployed) and it isn't total fluff. But it's not quite the same as a PhD, CFD, PE or something. I feel like less than half of the project managers I've worked for in over 11 years have had their PMP. And plenty of the ones I thought were among the best I've worked for did not have it.

^on the flip side, I've worked with some PMP's that I've wondered how they were even able to read to take the test.

I appreciate the comments - it reminds me to try hard to pass but it’s not the end of the world if I don’t. Pressure creates stress and I don’t want to live my life being stressed.

Pressure can be channeled into adrenaline instead and I can think of it like a game.

The meeting... basically I was mean to my boss and tried to bring down his entire operation. I was having a bad two days that I should have just taken off instead of being at work. I was only three three weeks but it just built up over time leading to this meeting. A lot of people at work are not that pleasant to work with and they’re just plain unhappy, no matter how much money they make.

Unemployment does teach you who you can lean on and there’s a positive side to it in how grateful I am to make progress. Without up’s and down’s, life could be pretty boring

Word of advice, I've worked with and work for folks that i've hated with a passion but they never knew. I think the secret is you will lose leverage with those folks if they know you hate them for whatever reason. I've always found success in playing the game, winning friends (see enemies), and having influence with all people. It might seem like im brown nosing or whatever but its really a game. be good at it.
