Could this work? Should professional sporting leagues require their athletes to have college degrees? I'm thinking of incidents where the league could be embarrassed or lose money as a result of something stupid and athlete did. Would it be smarter to cut out some of the marginal athletes in an attempt to make players have more common sense? I know athletes could still do stupid things but generally speaking college educated people are smarter than non-college educated people. Is it fair to argue that if an athlete can't graduate from college that they shouldn't be allowed to make millions of dollars?

NO. One of the worst ideas ever. I'll let everyone else tell you why, they'll be by shortly to tell you what they think.

I really don't want to say "Attn: Users with <5 posts" here, but the situation is dumb enough to warrant it.

There is plenty of proof in the world that a college degree =/= smarter, better, or faster.

You may wish to ponder the irony of your statement.

wow, this is a new level of stupidity for tww, and that's saying something.

btw, ask bill gates what he thinks of a degree prerequisite for making money.

while that may generally be true, the act of going to college has very little to do with making someone smarter

also, worst idea ever

I think we should make everyone go to and finish college. Since college graduates statistically earn more and are more successful.

I think you missed the point...

The likelihood of someone going straight from HS to the league is almost non-existent.
I believe this asshat is arguing that a player needs a degree before he can be drafted.

To which league? Lots of NHLers don't even go to proper high school.

Anyway, that's just me being hockey-centric again...but this thread is still stupid beyond belief.

^ yup, I know skills now, but my overall intelligence went down in college.

My peak was summer after senior year of HS.

and if you were a freshman in engineering, and some company came up to you and said "we know you just started, and dont have a degree, but we think you have SO much potential we will give you $25 million to come start now and learn on the job" everyone here would do it in a heartbeat

I think it would be a good rule to have but I'm not going to protest for it. If they're good enough then it would be unfair to stop them. The reason I'd be in favor of the rule is to prevent kids from taking bad advice and going pro before they're ready...and they're out of the league, out of money, and don't have an education in 2 years. Thats the only logical argument for making people get an education before turning pro.

I will say, that I don't like the "ask Bill Gates how his college education worked for him" argument here, because examples like that (outside of sports) are few and far between. Sure, people are rich as fuck b/c their families have money and they're not required to have an education to take over the company, but you wouldn't go tell your kid "no sweat don't get an education, bill gates is rich as fuck and didn't even go to college"

The real change should be the 1 and done rule. I'd rather kids go pro straight out of high school if they're going to go, and the kids that decide to go to college should have to stay 3-4 years like in baseball. That way you give the kid the option, but at that point if they choose education, they get one instead of half assing it for one year then going pro anyway.

That's more along the lines I was thinking. These people are going to go into a profession where financial success is almost guaranteed. What's wrong with trying to make them a better rounded, more educated member of society? As soon as they get that first paycheck they're going to gain a lot of power and influence. It's good that they do stuff like make them work for charities and that's more of what I was going for.

the career of most pro athletes is short. making them do 4+ years of college could cut their professional career by 25-50%
name me another career where this is a reality

and that doesn't even take into account what happens if you get injured in college

college degrees are not a guarantee this will be the case, nor are they the only way to achieve this level of development

If a kid can sign up to fight for a country in the military at 18 he damn sure should be allowed to put a ball through a hoop at the same age.

Yeah, I realize that. However, without trying to take anything away from hockey players, the level of athleticism required to play in the league is way beyond something that is achievable by the time you finish HS. Most true freshmen don't even play in college, and the ones that do are rarely physically or mentally capable of contending at the next level. I'm not saying it never happens, or that it never could happen, but most players aren't ready for the speed and strength even after a full college career, nevertheless after finishing HS.

That's pretty much true for every sport, not just football

Athleticism is probably a poor word to use, but I know what you're trying to say. You don't increase your athleticism in college.
