has anybody renting that big thing and tried it out? I need to get about 1800 sqft of carpets cleaned -- pros want $.35 a sqft which I think is a bit high. I wouldn't mind putting the time in myself if it worked - but wanted to check with you guys to see if it did so I don't get screwed twice 12/19/2008 6:28:07 PM |

he's comparing the cost of the rug doctor to the cost of having the carpets cleaned 12/19/2008 6:53:32 PM |

I used it just to do 3 bedrooms, I thought it did an OK job, but it was a huge pain. The water runs out really fast, and you have to dump it out, mix up the solution, fill it up again. I took FOREVER!! 1800 sq foot...plan on it taking HOURS and HOURS!! Plus you will need a couple bottles of that solution which is quite expensive. 12/19/2008 7:09:09 PM |

i will agree that the tank runs out probably every 5 minutes. you're looking at about 40 bucks including the cleaner to do that size house. its a decent job. if you have new carpet and want it looking good again, go the pro route, if the carpet is 5+ years old, go with the rug doctor 12/19/2008 7:18:30 PM |

^kinda true...my suggestion would be going the rug doctor route, and if you are not satisfied, go the pro route 12/19/2008 7:21:13 PM |

Like the others have said, it is decent for what it is. It took my wife and I a day to do about 900 sq ft of carpet, 2 rugs and 2 couches. That being said, get the wand if you plan on doing any furniture. It would be a pain without it.

split the difference and buy a real rug shampooer
more expensive than a rug doctor, cheaper than the pros
plus you have it available if you ever want to use it again 12/20/2008 4:38:17 PM |

^that's what I did. we have cats, so I typically shampoo the carpets about 4 times a year. It was well worth the investment, and the machine isn't nearly as nasty as rentals tend to be. 12/20/2008 5:02:52 PM |

Four times a year?
May I come eat off of your carpet sometime?
Sorry, just thinking of my bf's roomies who clean maybe once a year, and have three big dogs. I don't walk through the living room without socks or shoes. 12/20/2008 5:27:25 PM |

my allergies start causing me serious problems if I don't clean the carpets that often. My next house will definitely have tile or hardwood floors. 12/20/2008 6:28:25 PM |

For what it costs to rent it is a great deal. Before we moved out of our last place the carpets were disgusting. We put in a couple hours with the rug doctor and the carpet looked like new when we were done. 12/20/2008 6:36:34 PM |
