So I was stopped at the light on MLK at Kerr (afterwhich is 6 miles of freeway) and had a Z4 pull up next to me.
Light turns Green and we gun it and take off. I beat him clean off the line, he started getting neck in neck when i shifted to 2nd but i got back ahead around 4000 rpm then I lost him in 3rd

yeah, good luck with that. especially in raleigh or charlotte where they're really cracking down on street racing (and all of nc really, there was just a big bust in high point the other week). you can get slapped with anything from prearranged street racing, speed competition, and multiple other lesser charges. at the LEAST you would have gotten a careless and wreckless if a cop had seen what was going on. there's even a good chance of your shit getting impounded, in which case you may or may not get it back depending on the severity of the offense and/or what takes place in court. usually you have to be doing something pretty excessive for that to happen though.

lol, just throwin the truth out there making sure people are aware of the real consequences... something "mild" like this a cop might have turned a blind eye to before or at least only given a warning or speeding ticket, but not anymore. if you're going to race on a road that hasn't been pre checked for cops and any other hazards, you're taking a big risk. street racing at all is a risk in some form or another, but personally i like to even the odds as much as possible on any kind of bet. 12/24/2008 10:09:52 PM |

yeah, you dont have to break the speed limit to get a ticket. and cops arent dump. they know when you're racing someone. speed competition.
if you happen to tell him that you just accelerated quickly, he could give you a careless&reckless ticket, then charge the Z4 for racing and what not.
its def. not worth it. BTW: there are legal places to do things like this... and its only $10-15 12/25/2008 12:54:30 AM |

tr00. there's just some thrill about running on the street that the track doesn't always quite provide though. i don't know if it's just the extra adrenaline because it's highly illegal, not wanting to be labeled as a "track only" person, feeling the need to prove your street car is truly a street car that can get it done under any scenario, or what. i'd say that's only the case if you've got a car with something worth proving though. not some stock audi junk.
i can't say i advocate street racing, but i won't denounce it either assuming it's being done with the proper precautions. it's like anything else... there's a time and place for everything. i don't like fighting either, but there are times where you need to reach out and touch someone.
i think my biggest gripe about it is the highly publicized negative stigma it carries these days, and all the wasted effort and resources being put in to stop it because of that. it's beat into the heads of the ignorant general public about what a dangerous and deadly epidemic it is, when the statistics couldn't be further from the truth. there's a TON more dangerous things being done behind the wheel of a car.
^^dude, you're trying to argue semantics and i'm not going to waste my time with that. i'm sure you know as well as i do that police have a lot of leeway to give tickets for things based on purely on their opinion and judgement, especially with "hot button" issues. if you really believe that you can talk your way out of a citation, more power to you... keep doing your thing. i was just putting it out there for someone like you who's probably not as immersed in the car culture (or in traffic violations) as most of us garage regulars.

And BTW, the scenarios that everyone is discussing in here...that's exactly how I got my careless and reckless ticket back in '02 It was on Gorman Street and I didn't even really break the speed limit (probably 5-7ish over in the 45 zone).12/25/2008 3:00:53 AM |

Yep. Basically, the rule of thumb is this:
If cops don't like it, they will give you a ticket for it. Even if it isn't really illegal, there are enough "umbrella" charges that they can throw something at you. Then, as if that isn't fucked up enough, you are guilty until proven innocent in court.
If I was in a different situation professionally, I probably would just run from the cops any time I was pretty sure I could get away (which would be most times and places they'd be pulling me over, anyway). I'd rather not take my chances on them using good judgement. Those aren't good odds. In the position I'm in, the slight chance that I'd get caught just isn't worth it...the consequences would be catastrophic. Too much to lose. 12/25/2008 3:07:48 AM |

you may want to brush up on your facts bud....
you get 197hp at 7800 and 139ft-lbs @ 6100
hopefully your quick on the shift and are good at manipulating that throttle.
a VW TDI would easily send your rice-rocket back to Japan.
A true sports car from Honda would be the S-2000. Not sure why you'd buy a sports Civic. Either stick to your eco compact car, get a sports car, or enter the luxury segment with an acura.
Quote : | "Besides, is it still apples to oranges when the A4 gets smoked by a stock Civic" |
I doubt it. Maybe on Lowes Motor Speedway your stock civic would beat me on the open throttle zooming around the loop. My car would both beat you off the line and in handling though.
I'm not trying to be boastful calling my car some high performance vehicle. There a lot faster cars owned by various Garage peeps here many by purchase of a pricey vehicle; many from a car that has been modified or kept in pristine condition.
The "200" hp civic though is merely a marketing ploy used to cater to the pimply faced fast and the furious wanna be youth in america/Japan
