I'm using the 7000 build right now. Seems to be pretty nifty. I have it using 500 mb of resources with everything enabled. Really liking some of the random features like the auto-changing desktop background.

Just search the torrent sites for an .iso, mount it in Dtools, do "custom install" and it will install it on another partition. Took about 1.5 hours to dl and install.

it means you would install it as a virtual machine, running inside of vmware server or the like. This way, you can use it inside of your host operating system, without rebooting the physical machine.

I think I'm going to download and try it out w/ VMWare server.

stuck a fresh harddrive on a old HTC machine I had lying around. No the most commodity hardware so its not that surprising really. I didn't want to go through the trouble of making a vmware image even though that really is the right way to go.

the beta is supposed to be released officially early this month. There's speculation that Microsoft leaked build 7000 themselves.

It's supposed to go gold around early next year, or possibly the end of 2009.

I downloaded 7 earlier today and have it up and running. Everything is going smoothly, except for the fact I have no sound. I did some google'ing and tried to download some drivers but nothing worked. So I went into the control panel to my sound options, told that to check the driver, and it told me that I didnt need an update. The computer acts as if I have sound. The little EQ thingy (?) bounces when I have music on, but nothing comes out. Im currently using a Dell 1420 that had vista on it

k, i have Win 7 running in VMWare. It installed very quickly, and seems very snappy and fast.
Now granted, I have not used Vista very much, but I cannot tell any difference between Vista and 7.

Is this supposed to be mostly a backend-update and optimization release? Kind of like what Apple is doing with 10.6/Snow Leopard?

WinFS is mostly dead afaik

They are versioning it Windows 6.1 because of all the compatibility problems that crop up when applications check major version to determine compatibility.

Yeah I always liked XP and Windows 2000's control panel the best. It felt like I could actually find and access all the settings I needed to. In OSX I've had to change settings in the terminal a couple times and in Vista it's like you're at a grocery store looking for a loaf of bread and they've got separate "grain items", "baked items", "sandwich components", and "atkins-unfriendly items" sections but no fucking "bread aisle."

Of course after using Vista for a while you get used to it anyways so it's only annoying for a short time mostly.

So far I'm liking it a lot better than my first time with Vista. Seems to be more stable in the few things I've tried. I don't like how you can't (and least I can't seem to easily find out how to) add a toolbar to the top or sides of the desktop. I'll really miss that if I can't figure something out. Also it didn't find several drivers. Some I'm not so surprised at (my tv tuner card) and some I am (the xbox 360 receiver).

Right now I'm really hating how they named this product for one simple reason. Googling anything at all specific to this OS is next to impossible. Granted, there's not gonna be a ton of stuff out there right now that's specific to this sort of thing, but it doesn't seem like this is a problem that will easily remedy itself over time.

also, between the codebase version number and the fact that there have been more than 7 versions of windows (i guess it depends on how you count, but the blog post above and admits that some of the versions were just laziness)...AND the fact that there won't be any major changes (that i've read about, yet, anyway) between win7 and vista, it's completely stupid for them to call it "windows 7" EXCEPT as a ploy to get people to buy yet another OS

it is widely known that MS got lazy on the UAC stuff. The UAC prevents certain actions from happening, unless the user gives permission. For example, if you try to change, move, etc a certain file, UAC see's an attempt to change the file and prevents it, until permission is given. The laziness comes in there. It is possible to code the UAC to realize that a mouse click/user input is doing the changing and not a program on the computer. Of course, I guess someone with good enough skills could write something to get around this too.

Good implementation? A resounding no.

I had UAC turned off for a while, but when I was messing around with some stuff, Vista never let me (kept saying I didn't have permission). Turning the UAC back on solved all of those issues.

Maybe quiet mode (^^) works. What exactly do the mean by quiet mode? Let's the UAC run and automatically gives permission every time, without the pop-up?

it doesn't pop-up less, it doesn't pop-up at all. it's basically disabling the prompts but not UAC itself, allowing applications to continue without getting those stupid, "please enable UAC" prompts. the biggest advantage is that it allows IE to run in protected mode. run it. see if it doesn't help.

^the security file warnings are not part of UAC AFAIK, they are not asking to elevate permissions, they are just human checks (i think) to make sure that it's not a bot/virus trying to execute, then again, if they go away when UAC is disabled all-together, than I guess it is.

I'm really liking some of the things they've done with windows media center. The interface when watching tv is much better and it seems a lot faster.

All the "problems" I'm having so far just seem to be easily fixable if I took some time to mess with them. Like I don't like how every time I reboot it puts the Recycling Bin icon up top instead of My Computer. I'm sure that's a setting somewhere. But so far no crashes at all.
