https://signup.dreamhost.com/

promo code: 202

normally like $200, you get it for $10.74

this has apparently killed their main site, so just keep trying until you get in

I guess that's a good deal and all but...really? What does that say about their service if a coupon code can bring more traffic than they're able to handle?

meh

it's working now, but they downed it to 90%

still, $21.48 isn't bad for 2 years of hosting

never had any problems with dreamhost in ~3 yrs of having them host multiple sites. This is a good deal. Just had to renew last month for the normal rate (didn't bother looking for discount codes).

Earlier this year Dreamhost screwed up and billed virtually all of their customers for an extra three years, all on the same day. The damage was in the hundreds of millions of dollars, I think. Thousands of people faced overdraft charges. That's hardly "anecdotal". I was only saved because I'd already canceled that credit card.

That said, when they're not financially ruining their customers, they provide good service. And mildly amusing monthly emails.

^ True, that was a big screwup. But the good thing is they quickly admitted exactly what went wrong, and put in a lot of effort to return everyone's money and make sure it didn't happen again.

They're really good with customer support, too.

that's also why you don't use your credit card to pay for shit like that

if a merchant takes paypal or google checkout, i'm sure as hell not giving my credit card info out to one MORE merchant unnecessarily.

the way they process their paypal and GC payments, it's a one time shot. they're not recurring, nor do they set up a billing agreement. you have to explicitly PAY them.

as far as hosting companies go, dreamhost is pretty fucking awesome. yes, there are always people that are going to have problems.

that aside, you'd be an idiot not to jump on this. $20, people.

I've used dreamhost for about 3 years now.

I have never been over billed or had a huge service outage. All my questions have been answered promptly.

not sure where you guys are getting your info.

I've been using dreamhost for a couple years too. I wasn't affected by the billing screwup. They used to have downtime pretty frequently ( not quite as bad as hassell's hosting got to be) but it's been much better in the last year or so. Their customer service is very very good

[Edited on January 4, 2009 at 10:28 AM. Reason : Overall I'd recommend them especially at that price]

How is Dreamhost's php and MySQL support?

Some of the reviews said it was slow and prone to frequent outages. How has your experience been (for those that use Dreamhost)?

I signed up and have been trying some stuff with it. They put the MySQL server on a separate box from the Apache server. It was pretty groovy until I started to write this message.

Broadcast message from root@aquaman (pts/1) (Sun Jan 4 17:37:52 2009):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

Hmm, that's odd. Okay, restarted SSH session...

Using username "philihp".
Server refused our key
philihp@aquaman.dreamhost.com's password:

Okay, uh... strange. That worked before. tap tap tap password. Login is okay.

philihp@aquaman:/$ pwd
/
philihp@aquaman:/$ cd ~
-bash: cd: /home/philihp: No such file or directory

That's messed up. You get what you pay for.

That's what I'm worried about.

I'm not doing anything business/professionally oriented--personal/friends/family website, dick around with php and what-not, and move some of the things I serve locally to the big-ole intertube.

If it's going to be an exercise in frustration, however, I'd rather go somewhere else.

^^ where in the package did it say you were getting a home directory?

I kid, I kid... but on an unrelated note, is this package capable of hosting Java servlets ? I don't see Tomcat mentioned as an option anywhere

Were you trying to do this immediately after your account was activated? All that you've tried and more are working for me. My site is on aquaman as well BTW

All of the people that just signed up in the last few days with this deal were thrown onto the AQUAMAN server.

I read it on one of their forums - wonder if you can request to be moved to another box. You know that the people who signed up are going to pound that box to death.
