Hey guys I am trying to set up my wireless router (D-Link DIR-615) using my computer running Vista Home Premium. I've followed the instructions that came with the installation CD but the computer fails to recognize the router.

To top it all off, trying to open the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel causes Windows Explorer to crash. So now even though I am connected to the internet through TWC's Motorola modem and it works fine, the icon in the system tray shows that I'm disconnected. I scanned with AVG, SpyBot and Ad-Aware which haven't turned up any viruses or spyware. Any advice? Would this be something that Microsoft or D-Link tech support could walk me through over the phone?

Forget the CD, and login to the router via the web interface - using Firefox. If you're using Internet Explorer, stop, and get Firefox. IE sucks and so does vista's networking.

Check the manual or the net for the default username and password, and go through the menus to enable encryption and change the admin password. If you're having trouble figuring out which address to go to, it's probably http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1. Figure out what your gateway IP address is and use it.

Also, your TWC modem will need to be rebooted before it will give your router an IP address.

start > type "cmd.exe" in the search box and hit enter > type "ipconfig /all" > look for an ip that is in 192.168.0.0 > look at what the gateway address is

go to this address in your web browser and enter the default username and password

Thanks for the replies guys. So here's an update:

Using Firefox and the default gateway I went into manual setup. Changed the default username and password and set up encryption. Also re-booted the TWC modem. My computer (wired directly to the router) still will not connect to the internet.

I also tried connecting my wii through the wireless. While the router is broadcasting a strong signal and I was able to log in, it was unable to detect an internet connection. What am I doing wrong?

I've never really understood why all my friends call me with new D-link routers when they have problems getting them to work on roadrunner but every linksys i've ever seen you can just plug in and it'll work.

go to the router status page

if your WAN ip is 192.168.100.x, turn everything off and then turn on your modem, wait 30 seconds, then turn on your router
