So is it fucked up to be like "hey, we're cool, right? can you write a letter that speaks highly favorably about me in these particular areas: -punctuality -creativity -leadership skills -specific contributions that I make
That'd be great, and make about 5 copies...go ahead and seal them too, thanks..."
Or is that kind of what is just DONE? I want specific shit included on my letter of recommendation. i don't know what my boss's writing skills are like- i'm sure that they're very busy and maybe my suggestions will help them write it? I'm sure some of y'all have written letters of recommendation before... 1/8/2009 6:24:04 PM |

It will be awkward to them if they cannot think of specific examples of your creativeness or think of you as a non-leader/peon for life.
I'd write your boss a letter explaining why you need the recommendation in the first place. Then say "they are specifically looking for instances when I have shown leadership, remarkable creativity, and UNIQUE contributions that I make". 1/8/2009 6:30:56 PM |

It all depends on the person you are asking and how tight you are with them.
My old boss told me to just type something up and he would sign it.

I've written letters and then given them to the person for them to approve. You write things that are within reason, and it'll usually be fine.
But they're (^) right, depends on the relationship win your boss. 1/8/2009 6:34:55 PM |

I've done this before, but I was also on really good terms with the people writing the recommendation letters. 1/8/2009 7:20:37 PM |

the more specific, the better. it saves them some time and cognitive energry when you provide what you expect in the letter. if they don't want to take the suggestions then they don't have to... 1/9/2009 12:15:44 PM |
