I disagree with all of them. We have a justice system for a reason. I am assuming they were all given fair trials. You are street racing and kill someone? Why do you deserve your sentence reduced? If it was self-defense in a domestic situation, that should be something brought up at trial, or re-trial. Not just a letter sent from a judge saying there was "some" evidence that it "may" have been self-defense.
Pardons and reduction of sentences should be reserved for when there is a glaring miscarriage of justice. 1/11/2009 6:00:11 PM |

The first case is reasonable, but the others just made me wonder why they deserved a pardon/reduction. 1/11/2009 6:10:40 PM |

I will say that it is shocking that Easley did this. This goes against everything he had done in his 8 years as Governor. 1/12/2009 1:49:31 PM |

^Exactly. Guilt is supposed to be placed only if there is no "reasonable doubt." If there's enough evidence for a judge to be compelled to write to the governor, there's probably some reasonable doubt involved.
Also:

There are lots of cases where people go through "fair" trials, are convicted, and then later they're found innocent. It's why pardons exist, and why there's checks and balances deliberately placed in the system.1/13/2009 3:00:05 PM |
