Very disappointed that Clint and "Gran Torino" were snubbed. I saw nothing new or remarkable from Brad Pitt in "Benjamin Button", give the Oscar to Rourke.

Robert Downey Jr. was actually given a lot of consideration from a lot of people. Although controversial, I'm not surprised about the nomination.

I haven't seen over half of the movies in these nominations.

And I watch a lot of movies.

The only thing Benjamin Button should win is Visual Effects and Make-up I guess.

I think the Oscars are waaaaay better at select nominees than the Grammys

Downey has become one of my favorite actors - I went back and watched Natural Born Killers and he was the best part about that movie

How in the hell is "The Wrestler" not in best original song?

Encounters at the End of the World was so good. It's also cool to see Richard Jenkins get a nom for The Visitor. It was released so early this year I figured it would have been forgotten about.

Where I'd put my money:
Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Actor: Rourke
Actress: Winslet (possibly Streep)
Supporting Actor: Ledger
Supporting Actress: Tomei
Director: Boyle

"Downey could have ended up with an Oscar Nod"

I (sort of) told you so.

But yeah, excluding the emotions behind Ledger's passing, it comes down to the fact that Ledger had a lot more to work with this for his role compared to Downey. I think that Downey should get it over Ledger, but probably neither of them will take it. It will prolly go to PSH.

these nominations are crap. no best picture for WALL-E? how does slumdog millionaire get two nominations in the same category?

the irony of the downey nomination must be lost on the academy.

by irony do you mean that he was more of a supporting actor than a lead?

no, because the movie is about the superficiality of hollywood but more specifically, the awards ('you never go full retard', etc). downey plays a character playing an oscar-bait role.

WALL-E was such a garbage movie, if you say that it deserves and oscar nomination for best picture let alone saying it was good, then you lose all movie critic credibility points as far as im concerned

WALL-E is not even the best animated picture of the year, that goes to Kung-Fu Panda which is about 100 times better

also, Man On Wire deserves an oscar more than any other contender, save for possibly Ledger

[Edited on January 23, 2009 at 2:44 AM. Reason : unfortunately, i still feel like the RDj nod is a shot at ledger's chances]

How did Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler" not get nominated for Best Song? Tragic.

You said the irony was "lost on the academy," so I don't understand what you're getting at otherwise. I'm sure they knew what Tropic Thunder was about.
