So, I'm making myself a cup of java and I see my dog start taking a keen interest in the screened in porch. Here interest quickly escalates to pacing and I look out there and see a little finch has trapped itself inside and is too stupid to figure out how to get back out.

This happened a few months ago and I let the dog out without realizing the bird was out there. This ended with a dead bird and a very happy dog.

So, I thought I'd let this bird live and kept the dog inside. For about 10 seconds. The bird showed that it really was very low on the food chain by standing 1 foot from the open door and not having the good sense to get the hell out. My dog was whimpering and pawing at the door by this point and a part of me actually had a sick sense of interest about witnessing 'the hunt' right in front of me.

I opened the door and let my 40 lb mutt loose and watched the show. The poor little finch instantly realized her mild stuck in the porch problem had just escalated to about to be eaten problem and began banging off the screen in porch windows, falling to the floor, racing to a corner away from the dog and then back up again. The dog was jumping on everything in the porch without much regard to her safety, knocking over pots, chairs, and a bucket with shoes. It looked like she had the poor finch trapped in the corner for a moment, and then I saw it emerge, and like a bullet it realized where the door was and flew out, my mongrel in hot pursuit. She got as far as the fence and realized her fun, and hunt, was over.

Now she is sitting, rather hiding under a table, on the porch was a half sad half "i'm going to get a damn bird today" look. Waiting.

Yeah, what's with the bucket of shoes

Pretty funny story anyway. One time, there was a small bird that had flown into a window on the front porch and my Dad decided he wanted to save it since it was only dazed (standing, but very still). He put a laundry basket over the top so the cats wouldn't fuck with it while it recovered and then it could fly away.

Turns out that one of the cats pushed the laundry basket enough so that the bird was close to a handle, where the cat could reach in and kill it. I can't remember how we figured that the cat killed the bird...maybe it was a clump of feathers where it used to be and a satisfied looking cat
