Pit bulls are great breeds. They should never be banned and should never be used for dog fighting.

he was a big fucker too. i'd say 60-70lbs solid muscle. even had the harness leash on him. the owner said she was walking him and bent down to tie her shoes and he took off after a squirrel.

he then came snooping around my back yard, smellin all my AmStaff's shit.

cool lookin dog. had good color.

That's a very different experience than the pit bull that my girlfriend rescued.
The one that hates men.
And anyone wearing a hat.
And has attacked the alpha male belonging to the people who adopted it several times so they have to keep it in a separate pen and walk it by itself.

Very different experience indeed.

doesnt sound like a purebred...

you could call it the American Staffordshire Terrier, ya know

well ill be damned, staffordshire is a "cousin" to the pit bull terrier

Quote :
"Out of the 25 dogs who have earned UKC "superdog" status (by gaining championship titles in conformation, obedience, agility, and weightpull), fourteen have been pit bulls.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a working dog and is suitable for a wide range of working disciplines due to their intelligence, high energy and endurance. In the United States they have been used as search and rescue dogs that save lives,[8] police dogs performing narcotics and explosives detection,[9][10] Border Patrol dogs, hearing dogs to provide services to the deaf, as well as general service dogs.

I use to breed them, and any respectable dog man called them bulldogs, and not pit bulls.

I have an anecdotal counter to your anecdote:

When I was a kid, we had a Great Dane that hated all men except for my dad and my uncle. 175 lbs of solid muscle. He didn't really like strangers of any variety, for that matter.

By "didn't really like", I mean "would've probably at least occasionally eaten one".

but Danes don't have a bad rep...

All I'm saying is that there are docile dogs, aggressive dogs (where I'd put that particular Dane), and downright bad dogs with any breed, and a lot of it has to do with how the dog is raised/trained, and to some extent bred. Even if you want to go down the road of certain breeds being statistically worse, pitbulls aren't even it.

we should talk about cocker spaniels and dalmatians but then again they aren't all bad.

The only reason Great Danes don't have a bad rep is because you rarely see one. They are on the CDC's list of dog bite related fatalities; right under the Chow Chow. Guess what's at the top of the list?

Pitt bulls are only dangerous if hey are raised as such.

My family has one. We found her wandering the streets when she was between 6 months and a year old. She was very aggressive toward other animals and she was aggressive toward people if she didn't get her way. It took a while to train her but now she's the sweetest dog you'll ever meet.

The only reason you hear about pitt bull attacks all the time is because people train pitt bulls to be aggressive.

Based on your anecdote it sounds like Pitt Bulls are aggressive by nature and they only become non-aggressive if you train them as such.

You can train a tiger to jump through flaming hoops. I guess that means tigers are only aggressive if they are trained that way.

What he's saying is that it is somewhat en vogue to train pitbulls to be aggressive (even aside from the percentage that are no-kidding trained for dogfighting, which you don't really see with most other breeds).

Don't get me wrong. I know that any dog breed can be a jerk or a sweetheart. Training is only one of the environmental factors that will eventually lead to the dog's temperament. I just don't see the point in getting a dog that, at 35-50 lbs., far exceeds other breeds in dog attack fatalities. So you can train it and make it a nice dog like you have something to prove to the world. Big whoop. I wouldn't get a Clydesdale if I wanted to put bows in it's mane and ride around the field even though I probably could if I wanted to.

Based on my anecdote, she actually escaped from her previous owner (she was wearing a choke collar when we found her). We saw ads in the papers for others that were found in the area too.

They are hyper, energetic, territorial, and defensive by nature. They are no more brutal than any other household pet unless they are trained as such. What I'm saying is yes, there are a lot of violent pitt bulls out there, but that's mostly because people trained them that way.

People train them to be violent, because their natural tendencies complement that psyche. But if you got a newborn pitt bull puppy from someone and raised it just like any other dog, it's not automatically going to be vicious beast.
